Ole Miss steals one at Walton

FAYETTEVILLE -- Ole Miss put an end to Arkansas' 16-game Walton Arena winning streak in a big way.

The Rebels shot 56.4 percent from the field and beat the 19th-ranked Razorbacks 96-82 on Saturday night.

STARS Ole Miss’ Jarvis Summers had 17 points and 7 assists and Stefan Moody had 18 points. Arkansas’ Bobby Portis, Michael Qualls and Ky Madden had 23, 22 and 22 points, respectively.

TURNING POINT Ole Miss took command by going on a 15-2 run midway through the first half — keyed by three-pointers from Jarvis Summers and Dwight Coleby — to move ahead 27-12. Arkansas was never closer than seven points the rest of the way.

KEY STATS Ole Miss shot 74 percent in the first half and 56.4 percent for the game, including 8 of 15 (.533) three-point shooting.

Arkansas' last loss in Walton Arena was to Missouri 75-71 last season. The Razorbacks' fell to 61-7 at Walton Arena in Coach Mike Anderson's four seasons. Two of those losses are to Ole Miss.

It was Arkansas' most lopsided home loss since No. 14 Florida beat the Razorbacks 98-68 on Feb. 18, 2012, during Anderson's first season as coach.

"Ole Miss did something that I didn't think they would, especially here," Anderson said. "We play so well here, but they came in and they stole one."

Junior guard Stefan Moody led Ole Miss (11-6, 2-2 SEC) with 18 points. Senior point guard Jarvis Summers had 17 points and seven assists.

Rebels sophomore center Dwight Coleby had 12 points and nine rebounds, and sophomore forward Sebastian Saiz had 12 points.

Sophomore forward Bobby Portis led Arkansas with (13-4, 2-2) with 23 points, while junior guard Michael Qualls and senior Ky Madden scored 22 points each. Junior guard Anthlon Bell had 10 points.

Arkansas trailed 52-40 at halftime and never pulled closer than nine points in the second half, when it trailed by as many as 18 points.

"We just didn't bring it tonight," Qualls said. "It's just one of those days. We just weren't physical enough. It seemed like we were just a half-step behind tonight."

The Rebels hit 20 of 27 shots (74.1 percent) in the first half.

"The ball was just going our way," Summers said. "Everything was falling."

Ole Miss hit eight of its first nine shots.

"The way we shot in the first half gave us great belief," Rebels Coach Andy Kennedy said.

Ole Miss pushed its lead to 17 points, 59-42, on two free throws by M.J. Rhett with 18:10 left.

Arkansas closed to within 63-54 on a rebound basket by Portis with 15:20 left. After an Ole Miss turnover, Portis was fouled on a putback attempt but missed both free throws, keeping the Rebels' lead at nine points.

The Rebels then pushed the lead back to 18 points, 83-65, on Moody's layup with 7:06 left.

Madden hit 1 of 2 free throws to pull the Razorbacks to within 87-76 with 2:06 left.

Aaron Jones hit a layup with nine seconds left in the first half to give Ole Miss a 52-40 halftime lead.

The Razorbacks got two shots before the buzzer, but Qualls missed a three-point attempt and Portis missed on a tip attempt.

The Rebels finished 31 of 55 from the field, including 8 of 15 on three-point attempts.

"They made some tough shots," Anderson said. "It wasn't like we weren't guarding them, but I think we could have guarded them a little bit better.

"It seemed like they were never on their heels. They were always in attack mode."

Portis started the game by hitting two free throws and scoring on a layup for a 4-4 tie.

Qualls hit a 17-foot jumper and a three-point basket off an assist from Portis to put the Razorbacks ahead 9-8.

The Rebels then outscored the Razorbacks 16-1 over a 2:26 span -- including three-point baskets by Summers and LaDarius White -- to move ahead 24-10 with 11:38 left in the half.

Arkansas pulled to within 27-20 as Portis hit two free throws, Qualls hit a three-pointer and Madden scored five points on two free throws and a three-point basket.

The Rebels moved ahead 32-20 on a three-point basket by Martavious Newby and an 18-foot jump shot by Smith that made them 12 of 15 from the field.

Qualls hit two free throws to pull the Razorbacks to within 33-26 with 7:20 left in the half. Coleby scored on a dunk and a hook shot for a 41-29 Ole Miss lead.

A three-point play by Bell cut the Rebels' lead to 45-37, but Ole Miss went ahead 48-37 on Summers' three-point basket.

Qualls scored on a layup and hit 1 of 2 free throws to pull Arkansas within 48-40 with 1:09 left in the half.
