Schlesener signs with Cardinals

Rogersville pitcher Jacob Schlesener releases a fastball during the first inning of the Wildcats' 6-5 win over Marshfield on April 22, 2015.

— Arkansas has lost one of its top pitching signees to professional baseball.

Left-handed pitcher Jacob Schlesener has signed with the St. Louis Cardinals, he confirmed Tuesday. The Cardinals selected Schlesener in the 12th round of the MLB Draft last month.

According to MLB.com, Schlesener's signing bonus with the Cardinals is worth $325,000 - more than three times the value for his slot in the draft. He agreed to terms with the franchise last Saturday morning and informed Arkansas coaches of his decision the same day.

"It was a tough decision between the Cardinals and the Razorbacks," Schlesener said. "I've loved them both for a while.

"I knew in my heart this is what I wanted to do. It felt like the right decision for me to pursue pro ball."

The Rogersville, Missouri, native had a combined 2.87 ERA and recorded 11 wins over his final two seasons of high school. As a senior, Schlesener struck out 81 batters.

Asked about Schlesener last month, Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn wasn't optimistic the Razorbacks would ever see the pitcher on campus.

"I'd say it is 50-50 at the very best," Van Horn said.

Schlesener is the second Arkansas signee to sign a professional contract this summer. Junior college outfielder Sam McDonnell signed with the Angels after being drafted in the 35th round.

Four players from Arkansas' 2015 roster were drafted and all have signed. Drafted players have until July 17 to sign professional contracts.
