Spanberger's single snaps 6-game skid

Arkansas designated hitter Chad Spanberger bats during the Razorbacks' game against Southeast Missouri State on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville.

The final inning finally went Arkansas' way Tuesday night.

Chad Spanberger's game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth lifted Arkansas to a 4-3 win over Southeast Missouri.

The win snapped the Razorbacks' six-game losing streak, their longest losing since 2000. The streak included a pair of heartbreakers at No. 5 Vanderbilt, in which the Commodores won in the final frame.

For most of the night, it seemed like the streak would reach seven games.

After both teams scored a run in the first, Southeast Missouri scored two runs in the sixth on RBI hits by Garrett Gandolfo and Andy Lennington to take a 3-1 lead.

The Razorbacks managed to tie things up in the seventh.

Clark Eagan and Joe Serrano drew walks to lead off the inning, then advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. They scored when Andrew Benintendi's blooper landed down the third-base line.

Arkansas nearly took the lead, but Beninendi was stranded on third.

The Redhawks threatened in the ninth, as their first two batters of the inning reached base, prompting Dave Van Horn to bring in Jacob Stone. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third, but neither crossed the plate.

Alex Gosser caught Lennington too far off third, picking him off for the second out. Stone then struck out Ryan Barnes to keep the game tied at 3-3.

After Eagan flew out to start the ninth, Serrano singled and Benintendi walked, setting up Spanberger's game-winning hit.

The Razorbacks got a solid start from Keaton McKinney, who struggled against Vanderbilt. The freshman gave up only one run on one hit in five innings of work.

By winning, Arkansas avoided its worst 18-game start since 1974, its first year competing in the Southwest Conference and Norm DeBriyn's fifth season as head coach.

Arkansas and Southeast Missouri are scheduled to play again Wednesday at 3:05 p.m., but forecasts are predicting rain. The Razorbacks' SEC home-opener is Thursday against LSU.
