Diamond Hogs clinch sixth straight SEC series

Arkansas outfielder Joe Serrano runs to first base after an RBI single during a game against LSU on Thursday, March 19, 2015, at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville.

Arkansas did most of its damage in one inning and made it stick Friday night.

The Razorbacks scored five runs in the fifth inning en route to a 8-4 victory over Alabama that clinched their sixth straight SEC series win. That is Arkansas’ longest streak since 2004, when it eventually reached the College World Series.

The Crimson Tide used an RBI fielder’s choice and a bases loaded walk to take a 2-0 lead in the third, but the Razorbacks needed only two innings to pull ahead.

Clark Eagan got Arkansas on the board by stealing home in the fourth, setting the stage for the big fifth inning.

Michael Bernal swung at strike three, but the ball got away from the catcher and he was able to reach base. Bobby Wernes scored on the play to tie the game. Three batters later, Joe Serrano hit a two-run double.

After Andrew Benintendi extended his streak to 19 straight games in which he’s reached base safely, Tyler Spoon hit a two-run single to break open the game.

Alabama got one run back in the bottom half of the inning and had a chance to tie it up in the eighth. The Crimson Tide loaded the bases with no outs, but James Teague was able to work out of the jam while giving up just one run.

A pair of RBI singles by Serrano and Benintendi gave the Razorbacks insurance runs in the ninth.
