Plasencia qualifies for U.S. Open

Regina Plasencia tees off on the 15th Monday, June 23, 2014, at Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers during the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship local qualifying tournament.

— Arkansas junior Regina Plasencia has qualified for the U.S. Women's Open.

Plasencia shot rounds of 67 and 71 Monday at Bradenton Country Club to qualify for the tournament. The Razorbacks will compete at the NCAA Championship in Bradenton, Florida, beginning Friday.

"I played a solid round of golf in the first round and my putting was pretty on point (Monday)," Plasencia said. "I gave myself a lot of birdie chances and I converted those. And in the second round, I wish I could have given myself more birdie chances.

"The last round, the goal was mainly to get in."

The U.S. Women's Open will be played in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in July. It will be the second LPGA event in which Plasencia has participated after playing in the Walmart Northwest Arkansas Championship last June.

Plasencia was voted second-team all-SEC this season. She won the individual title at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic earlier this year.
