Hogs take notice of in-state receiver

Junior Cualan Williams has the makings of a top-flight receiver.

LaFayette County junior receiver Cualan Williams played football in junior high, but decided to focus on basketball as a sophomore until Coach Bobby Clark asked him to return to the gridiron this season.

“He came back and said ‘Coach I want to play’,” said Clark, who’s in his first season with LaFayette County. “He’s worked his tail off so far. I’m proud of him. He’s had a great attitude about everything.”

Williams, 6-3, 205 pounds has shown big playmaking ability by recording 9 receptions for 379 yards and 8 touchdowns for the 4-1 Cougars. Video highlights CLICK HERE

His play has gained the attention of Arkansas tight ends Coach Barry Lunney Jr.. The two have communicated on Twitter and Williams has received an invite to watch the Hogs play this season.

“I told him you can’t get the big head and can’t go out and be selfish because this is still a team and it’s not all about you,” Clark said. “He said ‘Coach this isn’t going to do anything, but make me work harder’.”

Williams was surprised the Razorbacks started showing interest.

“He was up at the weight room the next day, on a Saturday,” Clark said. “He came up and wanted me to open up (the weight room) and lift and he’s been there everyday. He’s staying after practice and running routes.”

Clark is high on Williams' upside.

“He’s so fluid,” Clark said. “To me, he looks like an NFL wide receiver. He’s 6-3 and 205 and his body is probably going to grow a little more.”

Williams also runs track and had early success as a freshman.

“When he was a freshman he moved up and ran senior high track,” Clark said. “He ran the 300 hurdles and qualified for the state and ended up getting second in the state as a freshman.”
