NCAA to allow schools to cover travel costs for parents on visits

NWA Democrat-Gazette/MICHAEL WOODS • @NWAMICHAELW University of Arkansas coach Bret Bielema works with the Razorbacks Saturday April 16, 2016 during practice at Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville.

The NCAA ruled on Tuesday that schools can pay for the airfare of two parents/guardians to accompany recruits on official visits.

Previously, schools were only allowed to pay milage to parents or guardians when they drove prospects to campus. Once the parents/guardians arrived on campus, the schools could pay for food and lodging.

The ruling is a plus for Arkansas because numerous prospects haven't been able to bring their parents or guardians on an official visit because of the cost of airfare and that hurt the Hogs' chances of landing the recruit.

The new ruling goes into effect August 1.
