McCann to begin rehab assignment

James McCann will begin a rehab assignment at triple-A Toledo on Tuesday the Detroit Tigers announced.

The former Arkansas catcher was placed on the 15-day disabled list April 12 after sustaining a left ankle sprain.

He has been rehabbing in Detroit and ran the bases Monday, according to the Detroit Free Press.

McCann will play at least four games in Toledo and is expected to start as the Mud Hens' designated hitter Tuesday.

Before his injury, McCann was 2-for-15 (.133) with two RBIs in four games. He hit .264 with seven home runs and 41 RBIs as a rookie last season.
