Maria Fassi advances at U.S. Amateur

University of Arkansas sophomore Maria Fassi defeated Yu Eun Eunice Kim of Australia 6 and 5 on Wednesday at the U.S. Women’s Amateur in Springfield, Pa.

Fassi, of Mexico, jumped out to a 4 up lead after nine holes, won the 11th and 12th holes, then halved 13 to advance to the round of 32. The No. 50 seed, Fassi will play Celine Boutier of France at 8 a.m. today.

Fassi’s teammate, sophomore transfer Kaylee Benton of Litchfield Park, Ariz., missed Tuesday’s cut and did not advance to the round of 64 match play.
