TJ Hammonds required surgery for meniscus tear

TJ Hammonds, freshman running back at Arkansas football practice on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016, in Fayetteville.

— Arkansas running back TJ Hammonds tore his meniscus prior to the Razorbacks' scrimmage Saturday.

Hammonds, a freshman, was scheduled to undergo surgery Monday to repair the injury. Arkansas coach Bret Bielema said Hammonds will miss at least 2 to 3 weeks of practice.

Bielema said the tear was "slight," and coaches have not made a determination whether Hammonds will redshirt. Bielema said Hammonds was a redshirt candidate prior to the injury.

In addition to Hammonds, Bielema said receiver Dominique Reed suffered an ankle sprain Saturday and may miss up to two weeks of practice.

"He rolled his ankle good," Bielema said. "He's out this week and probably next week."

Running back Kody Walker is in a walking boot, Bielema said, after irritating a foot injury suffered in the spring. It's unclear how soon Walker will return, but it does not appear he will miss any games.

Bielema said linebacker Kendrick Jackson has moved back to fullback behind projected starter Hayden Johnson. Jackson played fullback last season but was moved to linebacker in the spring.

Jackson was dropping on the middle linebacker depth chart, Bielema said, behind freshman De'Jon Harris and junior Josh Harris.

Bielema said he was pleased with the play of junior transfer Jake Raulerson and redshirt freshman Jalen Merrick at right tackle in Saturday's scrimmage. He said Brian Wallace, who practiced at right tackle until Saturday, has moved to right guard.

Wallace will likely back-up Paul Ramirez and Zach Rogers at right guard. Bielema said Raulerson and Rogers will continue to practice at center behind projected starter Frank Ragnow.
