The Recruiting Guy

Brown's recruitment likely to help teammates

Ashdown defensive back Montaric Brown.

Often times a prospect's recruitment can help attract attention for others at his school.

Ashdown safety Montaric Brown added a scholarship offer from LSU earlier in the week to go along with offers from Oklahoma State and Arkansas State.

Panthers Coach Matt Richardson compares Brown’s impact to Pulaski Robinson athlete T.J. Hammonds, who signed with Arkansas in February.

“He’s going to be our Hammonds,” Richardson said. “Hammonds did that for Robinson and now all those kids are getting tons of looks and he’s going to do that for us. It’s going to open up doors for all our sophomores We have three or four sophomores that will have a chance.”

Brown, 6-1, 180, 4.50 recorded 112 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 8 pass deflections, a forced fumble and 5 interceptions with 3 returned for touchdowns this past season. He plans to attend LSU’s Junior Day on Saturday.

He’s also drawing interest from Arkansas.

“When he gets the ball in his hands, he’s explosive,” Richardson said. “The first three ball games he had three picks for pick-six three weeks in a row.”

Richardson said Brown’s versatility makes him attractive to colleges.

“The best thing he does is ball skills,” Richardson said. “Because of his hips he can run with receivers.”

An Oklahoma State coach explained to Richardson why Brown is wanted in Stillwater.

“He said Baylor is going five wide and we have to have a kid to cover,” Richardson said. “So they’re looking at him more of a cover safety-corner kid.”
