FAYETTEVILLE -- Everyone tried to make his move into the lead during the men's 3,000 meters Saturday afternoon, but Alex George decided to save his best one for last.

The Arkansas sophomore found a way to catch Oregon's Jake Leingang and passed him on the final stretch to earn a victory during the Razorback Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Center. George, a native of Gloucester, Great Britain, had a time of 8 minutes, 9.79 seconds, while Leingang, also a sophomore, finished in 8:10.11.

"He is such a great competitor," Arkansas men's Coach Chris Bucknam said. "He brings his A game effort every time, and he's really rounding into shape. I think it's going to be a big year for him with how he competed."

Senior Gabe Gonzales, a senior from Springdale, had the first of many moves runners made during the race when he took the lead with 1,000 meters remaining and eventually finished fourth in 8:11.31. It proved to be instrumental because Arkansas vaulted ahead of Texas A&M in the team standings during that event, and the Razorbacks refused to relinquish that lead.

Carlton Orange, a freshman from Memphis, Tenn., strengthened the lead when he won the 800 in 1:47.38, then Clive Pullen Miller rallied to take the triple jump with a leap of 52 feet, 7 1/2 inches as Arkansas compiled 122.2 points. Texas A&M's finished second with 105.5, while Oregon used a late push to take third with 87.7.

"We got a great finish from Gabe Gonzales," Bucknam said. "He looks really good as well. We needed that shot in the arm with the win from Alex and Gabe's finish because it came at the right time.

"Carlton Orange may have punched his ticket to the nationals. That was his first 800 as an Arkansas Razorback, and he wins it with a national qualifying time."

In the women's division, senior Taylor Ellis-Watson spearheaded a good second day for Arkansas with her victory in the 400. The senior from Philadelphia crossed the finish line in 52.26 seconds, the best collegiate and world's best time this season, while teammate Daina Harper finished fourth in 53.91.

"Taylor is just one of those special athletes," Arkansas women's Coach Lance Harter said. "She's the one that leads us by example. She's just a fantastic athlete and student. She also anchored our [1,600-meter] relay and ran a 50.9 leg, which is phenomenal."

Arkansas maintained the lead it built Friday on the strength of four pentathletes -- sophomores Taliyah Brooks and Payton Stumbaugh of Springdale Har-Ber, senior Alex Gochenour and junior Leigha Brown -- qualifying for the NCAA national meet, as well as twin pole vaulters Tori and Lexi Weeks of Cabot. The Razorbacks finished with 127 points to 102 for second-place Oregon while Georgia was third with 76.

Arkansas' next highest finish Saturday came in the mile invitational, where senior Jessica Kamilos finished third in 4:39.70.

"We had a freshman, Kailee Sawyer, that had a nice breakthrough with a 2:08 [in the 800 meters]," Harter said. "Jessica ran the mile in under 4:40, which is a big breakthrough physically as well as mentally. All in all, it was just a fantastic day."
