Bentonville junior Mays-Hunt Shines in Showcase

— One of the most impressive prospects at this weekend’s Southwest Elite 7-on-7 Showcase was Bentonville junior wide receiver Kam’ron Mays-Hunt.

Mays-Hunt (6-2, 170) was named both the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s Sophomore of the Year and the Class 7A-West Newcomer of the Year after catching 53 passes for 556 yards and seven touchdowns.

“Our coaches have told me that Arkansas, Auburn and Arkansas State are showing interest in me,” Mays-Hunt said. “I really like Arkansas’ receivers coach (Michael Smith). He is really good. I like him a lot and he is really funny.”

Bentonville’s streaks of eight straight 7A-West conference titles and five straight state title games appearances ended last season and the talent pool also split in half as Bentonville West begins playing football this season.

But Mays-Hunt believes that the Tigers (10-2 last – who had 160 players out for spring practice - have the chance to be back in the winner’s circle again.

“Winning the state is always our goal,” Mays Hunt said. “I feel like we have a very fast team and I think we have all of our receivers coming back so we are going to be deadly in the throwing game and we have like two running backs coming back that run 4.4s so we should be good.”

Mays-Hunt made several spectacular catches Friday and Saturday, but knows he is just scratching the surface of his immense potential so far.

“I am still working on my route running,” Mays Hunt said. “Coach (Rod) Washington was working with me on that and said I have to get out of my breaks quicker.

“I do want to have more touchdowns this year.”
