Southwest Elite 7-on-7 Showcase

Fields loves what he sees in Arkansas

— Midwest City, Okla., safety Evan Fields took full advantage of his weekend in Northwest Arkansas.

Not only did Fields (6-2, 200 pounds) play in the Southwest Elite 7-on-7 Showcase games Friday at Fayetteville High, but he went down the street to check out the University of Arkansas.

“The facilities were top-notch,” Field said. “I had been to a game last year. They played Texas Tech and the atmosphere was one of the best I have ever seen. That chant, that Woo Pig Sooie – I love that. It’s really cool.”

Most of the Arkansas coaches were on vacation so Fields – who had 126 tackles and four interceptions as a junior - got to tour the facilities with Razorback recruiting coordinator E.K. Franks.

“The weight room was great, the best I have seen,” Fields said. “Everything they have is just top-notch. It doesn’t get much better than Arkansas.”

Fields’ chief recruiter for Arkansas is defensive coordinator Robb Smith.

“I usually talk to Robb Smith and he has been to see me at my school,” Fields said. “I really like him and he has told me how interested they are in me.

“I don’t have an offer from them yet, but Coach Smith has told me that I will be the next safety that they offer.”

Fields’ offers are from Arizona State, Houston, Navy, Memphis, Tulsa, Wyoming, Missouri State, Ohio, North Texas, UTSA, Louisiana-Monroe, Kansas State, Eastern Michigan, New Mexico, Texas State, Air Force and Arkansas State, which offered him first.

“I am just really enjoying the whole recruiting process,” Fields said. “I may try to make me a top five next month.

“I will take official visits and I will definitely take one here (Arkansas) if they offer me. I know I will take one to Arizona State so those two for sure.”

Fields did not play in Saturday’s games due to a bruised forearm.

“My biggest strengths are my athletic ability and my football IQ,” Fields said. “I think I need to work on being more vocal. I am not really a talkative person. But with me being a leader this year, I need to be more vocal.”

Midwest City went 6-4 last season while losing in the first round of the playoffs.

“We made the playoffs, but then got put out,” Fields said. “We were playing a lot of young people last year and they are all coming back so I think we have got a bunch of experience.”
