2019 WR puts on a show as a DB during Arkansas camp

Sophomore receiver Brandon Theus performed so well at Arkansas' camp, people thought he was a 2017 prospect.

— College football camps can produce surprises, and sophomore Brandon Theus was just that at Arkansas’ recent three-day camp.

Theus, 5-11, 192 pounds, played receiver for Euless (Texas) Trinity’s junior varsity last year, but it was his performance at defensive back that he got him on the Hogs’ radar. He blanketed receivers at the camp and looked like a natural doing it.

“I really don’t play DB, but I just wanted to try it and see how I do,” said Theus, who recorded 4.59 sends in the 40-yard dash during the testing session of the camp. “They didn’t have enough DBs, so I asked coach if I could try DB, and he said ‘go ahead.'”

Because of his dominance and physical maturity, coaches and observers assumed he was a senior-to-be, and that included Razorback running backs coach Reggie Mitchell.

“He thought I was 2017, too,” Theus said. “I get that a lot.”

Mitchell told him he plans to stay in touch. Theus enjoyed his time with Mitchell and the other Arkansas coaches.

“I loved working with the coaches,” Theus said. “They’re funny, and they don't take things a little bit too serious. They taught me a lot.”

Being from Texas, Theus also liked the cooler climate in Fayetteville.

“I loved it, especially the weather,” he said. “It’s cool here. It’s not as hot as Texas.”

Theus left Arkansas knowing he could play on the other side of the ball.

“I have a lot of confidence that I can play some DB,” he said.
