MSU ends Hogs' postseason hopes

Arkansas second baseman Rick Nomura bunts out in the fourth inning against Texas A&M on Sunday, May 1, 2016, during the game in Baum Stadium in Fayetteville.

Arkansas was eliminated from postseason contention with a 5-1 loss to No. 4 Mississippi State Friday night in Starkville, Mississippi.

The loss, combined with Tennessee's win over Georgia, means the Razorbacks cannot make the SEC Tournament, regardless of Saturday's results. Arkansas will miss the SEC Tournament for the first time since 2008 and the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2001.

The Razorbacks (26-28, 7-22 SEC) are also guaranteed a losing record for the first time in coach Dave Van Horn's career. Arkansas has lost 12 consecutive games, matching a modern-era school record set in 1965.

The Razorbacks struck first, scoring in the second inning on an RBI groundout by Rick Nomura, but the Bulldogs answered with three runs in the third and two in the eighth. Two of Mississippi State's runs were the direct result of Arkansas errors.

Austin Sexton struck out seven in seven innings to earn the win for the Bulldogs (39-14-1, 20-9 SEC). Freshman Isaiah Campbell took the loss in his first career conference start for Arkansas. Campbell allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits in three innings.

Arkansas closes out the 2016 season Saturday at 5 p.m. The game will be televised on the SEC Network.
