James McCann's first home run of the season - and eighth of his career - came off a former teammate.

The former Arkansas catcher hit a two-run home run off Drew Smyly to give the Detroit Tigers a 3-1 lead in the seventh inning Sunday. The Tigers won 5-4.

Smyly also gave up McCann's final home run of last season - a two-run homer that gave the Tigers the lead in a game they also won 5-4 on Sept. 7, 2015. He is the only pitcher McCann has taken deep twice in the big leagues.

McCann finished the game 2 for 3, while Smyly allowed three earned runs and struck out five in 6 1/3 innings.

The pair were teammates at Arkansas in 2009 and 2010.

McCann's home run wasn't even his best highlight of the weekend, however. He made one of MLB's best defensive plays of the year the night before.
