Frank Ragnow is the glue on Arkansas' offensive line

— Texas A&M may have two of the best defensive ends in the SEC, but Arkansas has the SEC's last two offensive linemen of the week.

Junior right guard Frank Ragnow and senior left tackle Dan Skipper have nabbed those awards after wins over TCU and Texas State. That pair will lead No. 17 Arkansas (3-0) against No. 10 Texas A&M (3-0, 1-0 SEC) Saturday at 8 p.m. in the annual Southwest Classic at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

“It is a lot of great game planning and it’s the SEC and that is what you have to expect week in and week out,” Ragnow said. “We have just got to pack our lunch and be ready to work.”

Ragnow knows how talented are Texas A&M defensive ends Myles Garrett (6-5, 270) and DaeShon Hall (6-6, 270), as well as defensive tackle Daylon Mack (6-1, 320).

“They have a front seven this year while watching film seem a lot more physical it seems like,” Ragnow said. “They bring a ton of problems up front.

“Here’s what we are calling it - we are calling it a two chin-strap game. You have got to be ready to play with two chin straps because they will come at you and pound you.”

Ragnow believes the Razorbacks have an edge with offensive line coach Kurt Anderson, who tweeted out Tuesday of his offensive line, "Our mother was a sledgehammer and our father was Zeus himself."

“There is a lot more to that man over there that you guys do not know,” Ragnow said. “He is a guy who in fall camp like I said is weird, he is a genus, he is a comedian, he has got so many sayings. He has got every movie line down, I promise.

“I just laughed because he does that quite a bit.”

Ragnow moved from center to right guard for the Texas State game. The transition was smooth, with Ragnow earning the league's offensive lineman of the week award.

Ragnow said he doesn't mind playing guard or center. He has played both positions against the Aggies - as a rotating center in 2014 and guard last year.

“I like center because I am kind of like the quarterback of the offensive line, but I also like right guard because you are kind of like the mauler," Ragnow said. "So either or. I like them both.”

By moving back to guard, Ragnow was able to help other transitions along the offensive line last week. Jake Raulerson and Zach Rogers rotated at center, while Brian Wallace and Colton Jackson rotated at the right tackle spot.

Arkansas coach Bret Bielema said Monday that Ragnow is a calming influence on both sides.

“I think I just help because I have been in this offense for awhile and I take pride in knowing the ins and outs so I can help out the right tackle and make sure he knows what he is doing,” Ragnow said.

“Because I have played center I can help out the center with his calls. I think that was one of the big things.”

Jackson started the first three games at right tackle, but Wallace was listed as a co-starter going into this week of practice.

“They are two guys - Colton Jackson and B-Wall - that you can tell really care about the game," Ragnow said. "It is just the mental things that kind of hold them back. Colton is a young guy and B-Wall is just struggling with the playbook a little bit.

“But they are two guys that care about the game so it is easy to work with guys that want to get better.”

Ragnow knows that Arkansas must bring a balanced attack to Arlington to be able to end a four-game losing streak in the series.

“It is crucial,” Ragnow said. “That is kind of our framework, our blue print. What we take pride in is being able to run the ball while setting up the play action. If not, just pass the ball, but it is very crucial.”

Ragnow is ready for the streak to end.

“It is super frustrating because I feel like both times we lost, I mean we were right in that game,” Ragnow said. “Credit to all them, but I think we were right in both of those games so it has been frustrating.

“So I am excited to see to get back out there in Jerry’s World and go against a talented team again this year.”
