Speed finishes 13th at NCAA meet

Arkansas junior Braie Speed scored a 9.825 on the vault to finish in a tie for 13th place out of 42 competitors in the afternoon session at the NCAA gymnastics championships Friday at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis.

Arkansas freshman Jessica Yamzon finished last among the all-arounders in 19th place with a 38.925 in the same session. Yamzon’s top score was a 9.875 on the balance beam, which put her in a tie for 13th place.

Speed rotated with defending NCAA champion Oklahoma, whose 197.725 placed first in the session. The Sooners advanced to tonight’s Super Six along with UCLA (197.5) and Utah (197.05), while Washington (196.5625), Denver (196.475) and Oregon State (196.3625) were eliminated from the team competition.

In the evening session, LSU (198.1250), Florida (197.7125) and Alabama (197.6000) advanced to the Super Six.
