Weather could alter weekend plans

— Severe and rainy weather could dampen a big sports weekend at Arkansas.

The No. 14 Razorbacks baseball team is scheduled to host a series against Ole Miss beginning Thursday, while Arkansas' football spring game is scheduled for noon Saturday.

Severe storms are predicted Friday as a warm front travels northward across Arkansas, forecasters said. Those storms will bring hail and strong winds are expected, as well as flash flooding. This weekend, parts of Arkansas could get more than 8 inches of rain, said Sean Clarke, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

Most parts of Arkansas not under the moderate risk for severe storms are under an enhanced risk, which is one step down, Clarke said.

Arkansas baseball coach Dave Van Horn said the Razorbacks won't schedule a doubleheader in anticipation of the weather. The Ole Miss series is scheduled to begin Thursday at 6 p.m.

"As far as Friday, that's still being talked about right now, but everything is still as is," Van Horn said. "We know that this is a big weekend with the football game on Saturday and a lot of people coming to town. We just have to look at the forecast (Thursday) morning one more time and then figure out what we have to do Friday and Saturday."

Per SEC rules, Arkansas and Ole Miss must complete their series by the end of Saturday. Games played as part of a Saturday doubleheader would have to be abbreviated to seven innings.

Arkansas officials have discussed contingency plans for the spring football game, but no decision on any potential change is expected until at least Thursday afternoon. Saturday's scrimmage will be the last allowed for the Razorbacks this spring, per NCAA rules.
