Lee Mayberry moves on to high school assistant job

Arkansas student assistant coach Lee Mayberry watches practice Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville. Mayberry will graduate from the University of Arkansas on Saturday, nearly 27 years after enrolling at the school.

— Former Arkansas great Lee Mayberry has moved on from his position as special assistant to head coach Mike Anderson and taken an assistant coaching job at Watson Chapel High School in Pine Bluff.

Mayberry was part of the Razorback staff for the last three years, first as a student assistant while finishing his undergraduate degree and then as Anderson’s special assistant. Mayberry’s wife, Marla, took a job in March at the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff as the vice chancellor for institutional advancement and development.

“Lee’s been a tremendous asset for our basketball program,” Anderson said. “He’s what Razorback basketball is all about. Played here, played in the league. Great mentor to our guys.

“He was learning everything that took place here. Not only that, he was lending out his wisdom as he’s gone on and done some good things. But we wish him well. It’s another opportunity for him to move on his coaching career and that’s what he wants to do.”

Arkansas has not filled the vacant position at this time.

Mayberry is one of the best players in Arkansas history.

He holds the program record for career steals (291), is second in assists (729) and third in points (1,940). He was a three-time first-team all-conference selection spanning the Razorbacks’ final two seasons in the Southwest Conference and first year in the Southeastern Conference in 1992. They won three straight regular-season conference titles during that time.

He went on to be selected in the first round of the NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks and played a combined seven seasons with the Bucks and Vancouver Grizzlies.
