2 Bryce Love, Stanford

3 Saquon Barkley, Penn State

Comments: Mayfield the runaway choice.

3 Jonathan Taylor, Wisconsin

Comments: Mayfield is a clear No. 1. It was the first time in a long time that I made up my mind before the conference championship games. Barkley's versatility is a real plus and unusual; a Christian McCaffrey type. Taylor provided enormous production by a freshman on a team that was 12-0, and it didn't matter the opposition.

3 Lamar Jackson, Louisville

Comments: When I vote I do it on a body of work and I never consider what they'll do as a pro. Mayfield was the get-up-and go in Oklahoma's offense all season. Love does everything in the game but clean up the towels when it is over. Jackson had a good year on a team that struggled with defense and not even he could help that.

3 Kerryon Johnson, Auburn

Comments: I was impressed with how Mayfield's play stepped up during Oklahoma's biggest games of the year, notably road games at Ohio State and Oklahoma State, and the two games against TCU. The second and third spots were between three running backs. Bryce Love and Kerryon Johnson edged out Saquon Barkley because of their play against the best defenses on their schedule, and how well they played through injuries.

Comments: Mayfield is the triggerman for an Oklahoma offense that is averaging 583.3 yards to lead the nation. His touchdown pass-to-interception ratio of 41 to 5 is mind-boggling to me and he's passed for 4,340 yards. He has helped OU beat a lot of good teams, including Ohio State and Oklahoma State on the road and TCU (twice) at home and at a neutral site and led the Sooners to a 12-1 record and spot in the CFB playoffs. Jackson leads the nation in total offense with an average of 411.0 yards per game. He's has passed for 3,489 yards and 25 touchdowns and rushed for 1,403 yards and 17 touchdown even though defenses key on him every week. He has helped Louisville go 8-4. Love has been a workhorse running back for Stanford and against a tough schedule has rushed 237 times for 1,973 yards to help the Cardinal win the Pac-12 North and go 9-4. He's been consistent with 11 games of 100 or more rushing yards — including 125 against USC last week in the Pac-12 championship game — and spectacular with a gain of 50 or more yards in 12 games.

I couldn't resist Mayfield, despite his flag-planting, R-rated antics and literal mis-steps in Fayetteville. For a guy his size to put up huge numbers and deliver a series of major victories as he has is something special, and he's a good apology writer and he did come back to Springdale a third time for the Burlsworth Trophy ceremony. If I can put Cam Newton, Johnny Manziel and Jameis Winston on my ballot, I can put Mayfield on there too.
