Arkansas golfer just misses invitation to the Masters

Alvaro Ortiz finished second in a three-way playoff at the Latin America Amateur Championship.

Arkansas junior Alvaro Ortiz finished runner-up in a three-way playoff at the Latin America Amateur Championship on Sunday in Panama City.

Ortiz had a chance to win the tournament on the first playoff hole, but was long on a birdie putt on the par-4 18th. Ortiz made par on the second playoff hole - the par-4 10th - while Toto Gana of Chile birdied to win the tournament.

Gana and Ortiz were tied entering the final round.

With the win, Gana received an invitation to play in the Masters in April. Ortiz, a native of Zapopan, Mexico, was trying to become the first Mexican to play in the Masters since 1979.

As runner-up, Ortiz earned an exemption into sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open at Erin Hills in June and entry into the qualifying series for the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in July.
