Jones could join Arkansas grid pledge list soon

Luke Jones for recruiting column

— Recruiting could get quite live for Arkansas after the dead period ends.

The Razorbacks are expected to host Pulaski Academy offensive lineman Luke Jones (6-6, 290) and Mesquite, Texas, Horn outside linebacker Maureese Wren (6-4, 220) sometime after the recruiting dead period comes to a close on July 9.

Jones confirmed his upcoming visit to Arkansas, who has nine pledges in what is expected to be a limited class of some 15-18 spots.

“I plan on visiting again in mid-July,” Jones said. “Hopefully I will do something after that.”

Jones got his offer after his performance at the Razorbacks’ Trench Hog Camp on July 18.

“It was pretty cool since I have always loved Arkansas,” Jones said. “I went up there hoping to get an offer, but not really expecting one. I am both excited and honored to get one from Arkansas.”

He now has 15 offers and has visited Arkansas, Iowa State and Arizona State.

Jones had originally intended to commit to the Razorbacks on the same day as two other in-state standouts in Jonesboro offensive lineman Paul Gatlin (6-7, 300) and Springdale defensive lineman Isaiah Nichols (6-3, 265).

Those two pledged to the Razorbacks on June 21 in one-hour intervals, but Jones decided to wait a little longer.

“I just wanted to be sure and go over everything one more time with the coaches,” Jones said.

Jones will be trying to cap off his high school career by winning a fourth straight state championship.

“We are always shooting for a state championship and it would be great to go 4 for 4,” Jones said. “I think that woulod be great way to end up.”
