6 with Arkansas ties drafted

Arkansas pitcher Trevor Stephan throws during an NCAA Regional game against Oral Roberts on Friday, June 2, 2017, in Fayetteville.

— Trevor Stephan turned down an 18th-round offer from the Boston Red Sox last summer.

On Tuesday, the Arkansas right-hander was taken 15 rounds higher by Boston's biggest rival.

Stephan was the 92nd overall pick by the New York Yankees in the third round of the MLB Draft. He is expected to sign with the Yankees and skip his final season of eligibility with the Razorbacks.

In his first year at Arkansas, Stephan ascended to the No. 1 starter and finished with a 2.87 ERA in 16 starts. The junior college transfer had a 6-3 record and led the Razorbacks with 120 strikeouts.

MLB's suggested signing bonus for Stephan's slot in this year's draft is $588,700.

"He passed on some pretty good money last year," Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said. "He really helped himself by coming here. I think (pitching coach Wes) Johnson really helped him pitch in our league."

Arkansas junior first baseman Chad Spanberger was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the sixth round with the 176th overall pick. Spanberger's slot in the draft calls for a $260,200 signing bonus.

Senior right-handed pitcher Cannon Chadwick was drafted by the New York Mets with the 277th overall pick in the ninth round. Chadwick's draft slot is valued at $139,700.

Dominic Taccolini, another senior right-handed pitcher, was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 10th round with the 288th overall pick. That slot value is $136,600.

Taccolini was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays last year with the 492nd overall pick in the 16th round.

Arkansas also is expected to have several signees selected over the final two days of the draft. The first signee to go off the board is left-handed pitcher Daniel Tillo of Iowa Western College, drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the third round with the 90th overall pick.

Tillo, who played at Kentucky as a freshman two years ago, was one of two high draft prospects - along with St. Louis right-handed pitcher Jackson Rutledge - that Van Horn identified last week as players who could potentially turn down the pros.

The suggested signing bonus for Tillo is $607,300.

"If you look at his numbers, he had a lot of walks, but he's got a great arm," Van Horn said of Tillo. "He's a 6-5 left-hander who throws 95 mph. There's not a lot of them out there. We're hoping he'll come in here for one year and do what Trevor did."

Canaan Smith, an Arkansas outfielder signee from Rockwall, Texas, was selected by the Yankees in the fourth round with the 122nd overall pick. The slot value for Smith is $433,100.

Smith, who also plays catcher and in the infield, was projected as the No. 367 prospect in the draft by Baseball America.
