X-ray negative on Carson Shaddy's ankle

Arkansas second baseman Carson Shaddy makes a diving stop during a game against Rhode Island on Sunday, March 12, 2017, in Fayetteville.

— An X-ray on Arkansas infielder Carson Shaddy's right ankle was negative, a person with knowledge of the injury told WholeHogSports on Monday.

It's unclear when Shaddy will be able to return to the Razorbacks' lineup, but Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn indicated it likely won't be for the Razorbacks' midweek series against Alcorn State. Arkansas opens SEC play with a home series against Mississippi State on Friday.

"He’ll be day-to-day," Van Horn said Sunday. "Obviously I don’t feel he’ll play Tuesday and probably not Wednesday. Hopefully by Friday he’s good enough to play, but we’ll see."

Shaddy was injured Sunday when he tripped over a base while rounding second during the fourth inning of a game against Rhode Island. Shaddy had to be helped off the field with the injury, which later was described as a sprain.

Shaddy is second on Arkansas' team in batting average (.333) and RBI (16) this season. Defensively, he has committed a team-high seven errors at second base, third base and catcher, but made two highlight-reel plays from his regular post at second prior to the injury Sunday.

"He’s got really good range out there," Van Horn said. "Sometimes he just gets ahead of himself. He’s got some errors that he shouldn’t make. I think if he had more experience there ye wouldn’t ask them and he won’t make them down the road.

"So when he gets it all together you are going to see a solid guy out there in the middle."

Freshman Jaxon Williams likely will fill-in at second in Shaddy's absence. Williams has 12 RBI in 12 games this season, including five starts.
