Hogs fall farther back at NCAA regional

Arkansas' Mason Overstreet is tied for 33rd after the second round of the NCAA regional in Baton Rouge, La.

The No. 31 Arkansas Razorbacks slid back to a 13-over par 301 on Tuesday in the second round of the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional to jeopardize their chance for advancing to the NCAA championships next week.

The Razorbacks, who shot 11-over 299 on Monday, are sitting in sole possession of eighth place at 24-over par, 28 shots behind No. 6 LSU, the regional leader at their home University Club golf course.

Arkansas is 12 shots out of fifth place, where No. 7 Oregon and No. 29 Northwestern are tied at 12-over. The top five teams from each of six NCAA regionals advance to the finals at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., on May 26-31.

The final round of the 54-hole regional will be today, with Arkansas teeing off on No. 10, for the third consecutive day, at 7:30 a.m.

LSU is the only team below par at 4-under. No. 19 Duke had the day's best round on Tuesday with an even par 288 to reach 3-over for the tournament. No. 18 Virginia is in third at 4-over, followed by Oregon and Northwestern, Kentucky (13-over), Jacksonville (18-over) and the Razorbacks.

Arkansas was led by junior Alvaro Ortiz and freshman Luis Garza, who both carded 2-over 74 on Tuesday and are tied for 27th place at 6-over for the tourney. Sophomore Charles Kim fired a 3-over on Tuesday and is in 26th place at 5-over.

Freshman Mason Overstreet, who had a 1-over 73 on Monday, shot 78 on Tuesday and is tied for 33rd at 7-over. Freshman William Buhl is tied for 59th at 14-over after shooting 78 on Tuesday.

LSU's Sam Burns followed his 7-under round on Monday with an even par tour on Tuesday and holds a 5-shot lead over Oregon's Wyndham Clark and Duke's Alex Smalley for medalist honors.
