Mason Overstreet earns runner-up finish at NCAAs

Arkansas' Mason Overstreet is tied for 33rd after the second round of the NCAA regional in Baton Rouge, La.

Arkansas freshman Mason Overstreet made a run at winning the NCAA individual championship in Monday's final round.

Overstreet earned a runner-up finish by closing the tournament with a 1-under-par 71 to finish 7-under, 4 shots back of Ole Miss' Braden Thornberry, who also fired a final-round 71 to finish 11-under and win the individual title.

Overstreet made a short birdie putt on the par-5 18th to break out of a four-way tie for second and claim the outright runner-up finish, the second-best finish in program history.

He had a shot to win heading down the stretch, trailing Thornberry by 2 strokes with 3 holes to play, but failed to get up and down for par on the par-3 16th and the par-4 17th, back-to-back bogeys which effectively ended his chances of winning.

But the Kingfisher, Okla., native used an exciting final round to charge up the leaderboard after entering the day in a tie for 10th six shots back of the lead. Texas junior Scottie Scheffler was 12-under with a 2-shot lead heading into Monday, but fired a final-round 78 to open the door for others.

Overstreet capitalized, birdieing the par-5 second and par-3 third to quickly move to 8-under. He alternated bogies and birdies on holes 9 through 12, chipping in for birdie on the 10th and birdieing the short par-4 12th to move back to 8-under and into sole possession of second place.

His final round 71 capped a strong week which featured a 70 on Friday, 68 Saturday and 72 Sunday.
