Arkansas advances to SEC championship with penalty kick win

Arkansas defeated Vanderbilt 4-2 in penalty kicks in the semifinal round of the SEC Soccer Tournament on Thursday in Orange Beach, Ala.

The Razorbacks (11-9-2) advanced to the tournament championship for the second consecutive season. Arkansas will play No. 11 Texas A&M on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Parker Goins' goal in the Razorbacks' fourth attempt of the penalty shootout secured the win. Arkansas made all four of its attempts, while Vanderbilt missed its first two attempts.

Arkansas goalkeeper Taylor Beitz made a save on the first Commodores attempt by Kaitlyn Fahrner. Vanderbilt missed a second attempt when Stephanie Amack's shot went off the goal post.

In addition to Goins, Arkansas' penalty goals were scored by Jessi Hartzler, Taylor Malham and Nayeli Perez.

Beitz replaced Jordan Harris as the Arkansas goalkeeper after a 20-minute overtime period ended without a goal. Harris recorded two saves.

Arkansas led 1-0 when Kayla McKeon scored off a punch-out by Fahrner, the Vanderbilt keeper, in the 22nd minute, but Vanderbilt tied the game 1-1 on Paola Ellis' goal in the 41st minute off a header cross from Madison Elwell. Neither team scored in the second half.

The Razorbacks out-shot the Commodores 16-12. Fahrner recorded eight saves for Vanderbilt (12-6-2).

Arkansas and Vanderbilt had played to a scoreless tie earlier this year in Nashville, Tenn.

Texas A&M (16-2-1) beat Florida 2-1 in overtime in the second semifinal Thursday. Texas A&M, the No. 2 seed from the conference, beat Arkansas 2-1 on Sept. 29 in College Station, Texas.

It is the second consecutive season the Razorbacks will play in the championship game. Arkansas lost 2-1 to Florida in overtime of the final last season.
