Arkansas blows out Samford to open season

Arkansas guard Anton Beard drives during a game against Samford on Friday, Nov. 10, 2017, in Fayetteville.

Arkansas 95, Samford 56 - Final

All the walk-ons played and Arkansas won its 44th consecutive home opener in front of 8,054 at Bud Walton Arena.

The Razorbacks had six players - Daryl Macon and Jaylen Barford (16 points apiece), Adrio Bailey (15), Anton Beard (14), C.J. Jones (12) and Daniel Gafford (10) - score in double figures.

Arkansas had 12 dunks and a couple of other breakaway layups, keeping the crowd into the game. The Razorbacks made 57.1 percent (37 of 63) of its field goal attempts and held Samford to 32 percent (20 of 61).

More coming soon.

Arkansas 81, Samford 41 - 6:31, Second Half

Daniel Gafford is the fifth Arkansas player in double figures, up to 10 points in his debut.

Arkansas 71, Samford 27 - 11:35, Second Half

This game has been defined by Arkansas runs.

There was a 16-0 run to take command in the first half, then a 10-0 run to begin the second half.

Now the Razorbacks are on a 14-0 run and have their biggest lead of the game. Arkansas has made 61 percent of its field goal attempts, including 9 of 18 3-pointers.

Macon (16 points), Bailey (11), Beard and Barford (10 apiece) all have scored in double figures, but it might be a lot of reserves playing the majority of the final 10 minutes.

The attendance tonight is 8,054.

Arkansas 59, Samford 27 - 15:33, Second Half

The Razorbacks continue to get several easy looks at the basket, evidenced by the latest Adrio Bailey alley-oop dunk that put the Hogs ahead by the current score.

Bailey has made all five of his shot attempts - it's hard to miss dunks - and has 11 points.

The Razorbacks have led by as many as 38 points before Samford's hottest stretch of the game pulled the Bulldogs within 57-27.

Arkansas 55, Samford 19 - 18:36, Second Half

The intermission did little to cool down Arkansas.

Jaylen Barford in on an 8-0 run to open this half. Barford has made a pair of 3-pointers and also had a steal and layup in Arkansas' first three possessions of the half.

Just like that, he has 10 points to join Daryl Macon in double figures.

Arkansas 47, Samford 19 - Halftime

Believe it or not, Samford led at one point. Then the floodgates opened.

Arkansas closed the first half on a 42-13 run, thanks in large part a great 60 percent shooting performance. Daryl Macon has 14 points and Adrio Bailey has nine points to lead the Razorbacks.

Arkansas has had several point-blank looks, including a slam by freshman Gabe Osabuohien just before the half.

The Razorbacks' defense has been good. Samford has committed 11 turnovers that Arkansas has converted into 19 points, and the Bulldogs made only 7 of 26 attempts.

Arkansas 40, Samford 17 - 3:22, First Half

This one is a rout.

The Razorbacks are playing loose and look like they are having a lot of fun. Trey Thompson and Adrio Bailey had alley-oop dunks on consecutive possessions, and Thompson poked a ball away at the top of the key that Anton Beard took for an uncontested layup.

Arkansas has 15 of 26 field goal attempts. The Razorbacks have 12 points off eight forced turnovers.

Arkansas 32, Samford 12 - 6:58, First Half

Daryl Macon is 4-for-5 from 3-point range and has 14 points to lead all scorers. The Razorbacks have made 6 of 10 3-pointers, the last by Anton Beard in transition.

The crowd has been into this one, in part because of good effort. During one sequence, Daniel Gafford and Darious Hall combined for three second-chance shots, the final converted by Gafford as part of a three-point play.

Samford is shooting just 22 percent right now. One of the few makes was a great 3 as the shot clock expired by Christen Cunningham, who was being heavily defended by Jaylen Barford.

Arkansas 21, Samford 6 - 11:52, First Half

Arkansas in on a 16-0 run and has Samford on the ropes early.

The Razorbacks have made three 3-pointers during the run, but the key has been the passing of Anton Beard, who has five assists already. Beard got the run started with a great downcourt pass to Bailey on the three-point play, and he also had the assists on 3s from Daryl Macon C.J. Jones.

Samford has made just 3 of 9 field goal attempts, and has missed all three of its 3-point tries.

Arkansas 13, Samford 6 - 15:27, First Half

As expected, it's a quick pace early. The Razorbacks took the lead on a good transition basket by Adrio Bailey, who was fouled and converted the three-point play.

But the story so far has been Daryl Macon, who has made two 3-pointers and has eight points. His last 3 forced a timeout from Samford coach Scott Padgett and prompted a Hog Call.

The crowd has been good so far. Arkansas' defense got the fans into the game on the Bulldogs' second possession when Samford committed a shot clock violation.

Fans are still filing in, but it has filled up nicely for an early-season game. Attendance might be around 8,000 or so.

Starting Lineup

Arkansas will start guards Daryl Macon, Jaylen Barford, Anton Beard, and forwards Adrio Bailey and Trey Thompson.

Pregame

A smallish crowd is in its seats about 10 minutes before tipoff, but there are a good number of students here, which is kind of rare for this early in the season.

Arkansas players are going through warmups tonight in red, white and blue tops, an observance of tomorrow's Veterans Day.

Expect this to be an entertaining game, with some quick action back-and-forth. Samford was a dangerous 3-point shooting team last season and the Razorbacks' perimeter defense was lacking in the preseason, so that is going to be something to keep an eye on.

Arkansas will be without three players - Khalil Garland, Dustin Thomas and Arlando Cook - again tonight; Garland with a medical condition and the others suspended. That means the Razorbacks might only go eight deep, something to watch both at the end of tonight and in Sunday's quick turnaround against Bucknell.
