Signing day rapidly approaching

Arkansas coach Chad Morris watches warmups prior to the Class 4A State Championship Game between Warren and Arkadelphia on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017, at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock.

Less than a week from now, new Arkansas football coach Chad Morris and his tech-savvy, energetic staff will unveil their first Razorback recruiting class.

That will include the eight early signees landed on Dec. 20-22, with linebacker Bumper Pool, defensive end Isaiah Nichols and wide receiver Mike Woods already enrolled, plus some eight or so more prospects that will ink letters of intent on Wednesday, the traditional national signing date.

No doubt it will include a lavish presentation on social media, something this staff does extremely well in reaching out to both prospects and fans.

"The way I look at it, if we are not talking to those kids with the various ways you can these days, then somebody else is," Morris said recently. "It's extremely important to show what our program, our people and our staff are about and to stay in touch as much as possible."

What have we learned so far about the new guys tasked with reviving a program that has trended down the past two seasons?

First, they know how to use social media platforms Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram.

Morris brought along Brooks Cockrell from SMU to be his director of recruiting operations and director of creative media.

Cockrell graduated from Arkansas State with a bachelor's degree in radio/television broadcasting and a master's degree in mass communication while also working with the Red Wolves football program. He produces highlight, promotional and motivational videos, and assists in running Arkansas football's social media accounts.

Cockrell made a very salient point during an interview with the Dallas Morning News back in October of 2016.

"When we started, our goal was to stay away from long-form media," Cockrell said. "Most kids in that age range are not going to stay with a five- to six-minute video. They don't have that long of an attention span.

"Two minutes at the most, or shorter than that, to keep them in that 30-second range; you get their attention for a second, and if you're lucky, they'll check out your profile sections."

Morris' staff -- especially the youthful offensive and defensive coaches -- are highly visible on Twitter.

While some of my generation run away from it, social media is very informative, and it is a must in recruiting these days -- be it a coach or a recruiting writer.

Secondly, these guys hustle. While it remains to be seen how successful they are over the long haul, you have to appreciate what they have accomplished with just two months to recruit at Arkansas.

When the Razorback administration decided to let former coach Bret Bielema go, the Razorbacks had 12 commits.

Whether it was the recruits' decision or the new staff deciding not to pursue some pledges, only four of those commits survived the transition.

Morris and his staff flipped their two best pledges from SMU -- Woods and offensive lineman Silas Robinson -- and have since landed eight more players.

That current composition of the 14-member class includes four defensive linemen, three offensive linemen, two linebackers, a cornerback, a safety, a quarterback, a running back and a wide receiver.

One of those is Ashdown cornerback Ladarrius Bishop, who had previously committed to Mississippi State when the former Razorback staff gave him a deadline to commit or the scholarship would no longer be available.

Right away, Morris made a trip to Ashdown and left a lasting impression with Panthers head coach Matt Richardson.

"The one thing about this staff that I noticed was how much they make you feel like you are wanted, needed and their No. 1 priority," Richardson said. "That was something that Ladarrius felt right away."

This year's recruiting class -- featuring two four-star prospects and 12 on three-star lists -- is not ranked in ESPN's top 50 and comes in 57th in the 24/7 composition rankings of the top four services.

The quality in this class is there. If there was more on the quantity with four more pledges, it would vault the Hogs into the 30s and full class of 25 somewhere in the 20s. There are not enough available scholarship slots for Morris to sign 25.

The first true measure of this new staff's ability to recruit will come in 2019 when they have a chance to recruit for a full year and maybe a full quota.

But from this vantage point, one has to like and admire what they have accomplished during the short time they have been at Arkansas.
