Mason enjoys getting second look at Arkansas

Myles Mason

— The Razorbacks have certainly put themselves in a good spot to flip one of the nation’s top safeties.

Trussville, Ala., Hewitt Trussville standout Myles Mason (6-2, 205) made his second trip to Arkansas in just over a month with this one being on his own dime.

Mason, a Mississippi State commit, took his Razorback official visit in mid-December, but decided to come back to Fayetteville now that the Razorbacks have hired defensive coordinator John Chavis and secondary coach Ron Cooper.

“They just hired Coach Chavis and Coach Cooper, and that was my first time to be able to spend time with them, so I just took the opportunity to come back,” Mason said.

“They’re both great coaches with great experience. They’re just real personable people.”

The visit allowed his older brother Ryan to look over the Arkansas program.

“They left a good impression on me the first time,” Mason said. “My brother didn’t come the first time, either, so we just decided to come back. He loved it really. It left a good impression on us.”

Mason had 41 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 2 pass breakups and a forced fumble this season while missing four games after having a knee scoped for torn cartilage and a chipped bone.

He committed to Mississippi State on October 26 over Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State and others.

Mason played his senior season at Hewitt-Trussville for former Shiloh Christian head coach Josh Floyd after playing previously at Pleasant Grove.

“I’m still committed to Mississippi State, but I’m just taking it one day at a time until February 7 on signing day,” Mason said.

Mason, whose dad Larry was a running back that played in the NFL (Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers), USFL (Jacksonville Bulls) and the CFL (Calgary Stampede), doesn’t have any other visits set up, but is considering three other schools.

“Louisville, maybe Notre Dame, and Alabama,” Mason said.

Mason and the 10 other recruits Arkansas had in this weekend took in the Razorback basketball team’s 97-93 win Ole Miss before 18,030 fans at Bud Walton Arena.

“It was pretty intense,” Mason said. “It was a great game, great atmosphere.”

Mason may take his recruiting process to the very end.

“Probably just wait it out until signing day,” Mason said.
