Arkansas signee goes 61st to Yankees; no Razorbacks taken on first night of MLB Draft

Josh Breaux is considered the top prospect in Arkansas' 2018 signing class.

— Josh Breaux, considered one of the headliners of Arkansas’ 2018 baseball signing class, was selected in the second round, 61st overall by the New York Yankees in the MLB Draft on Monday.

The suggested signing value for Breaux's position in the draft is $1.1 million, according to MLB.com.

Breaux, a 6-2, 215-pound catcher from McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas, was rated as the No. 88 draft prospect by Baseball America in 2018 and the top junior college prospect in the nation in December, according to Perfect Game.

The Tomball, Texas, native batted .401 with 19 home runs and 82 RBI in 59 games as a freshman at McLennan. He hit four home runs in the 2017 JUCO World Series.

As a sophomore, Breaux hit .404 with 18 home runs and 69 RBI for the Highlanders, who finished 2018 with a 44-15 record.

Breaux was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 36th round of last June’s draft, but elected to return to school. He is one of two catchers that were taken by the Yankees on Monday.

No Arkansas players were drafted through 78 picks Monday, but multiple Razorbacks are expected to be drafted Tuesday during rounds 3-10.

Arkansas pitchers Blaine Knight and Isaiah Campbell, and catcher Grant Koch are among the top 100 prospects left on the board, according to Baseball America. Other Razorbacks who could be drafted Tuesday include shortstop Jax Biggers, outfielder Eric Cole and pitcher Kacey Murphy.
