Arkansas loses to Charlotte in midweek

Charlotte 6, Arkansas 3 - Final

Jonah Patten was a little erratic with some pitches outside the zone, but he got the job done and the Razorbacks have a disappointing road loss to their record.

Grant Koch walked with no outs, but no more Razorbacks reached in the ninth. Carson Shaddy struck out looking a 2-2 pitch that appeared to be out of the zone, then Jax Biggers flied out to deep center and Eric Cole struck out swinging at a high fastball to end the game.

Patten earned his second save for the 49ers. Kole Ramage, who gave up the go-ahead hit in the seventh, took the loss for Arkansas. Colby Bruce was the winning pitcher with 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

Charlotte outhit Arkansas 9-7. The Razorbacks stranded eight runners. The 49ers improved to 12-8 overall, while the Razorbacks fell to 16-5.

Arkansas has Thursday off before its SEC road opener at No. 2 Florida on Friday night.

Charlotte 6, Arkansas 3 - Top 9th Inning

Heston Kjerstad led off the ninth with a home run to opposite field in left. Charlotte has brought in a new pitcher, right-hander Jonah Patten. Patten began his college career with the Razorbacks in 2015.

Charlotte 6, Arkansas 2 - End 8th Inning

Jax Biggers had two errors in the eighth, including a fielding error that gave the 49ers a run with two outs. Zebulon Vermillion appeared to have gotten out of the inning with a groundball to Biggers at shorstop, but the ball took a funny bounce off the turf and went up Biggers' arm.

The Razorbacks need a big ninth to avoid their fifth loss.

Charlotte 5, Arkansas 2 - Bottom 8th Inning

This one is getting away from the Razorbacks. Arkansas is on its fourth pitcher of the eighth inning after the 49ers have put five aboard with a hit, an error, a hit batter and two walks. The Razorbacks also have had a wild pitch and a throwing error by Grant Koch.

Zebulon Vermillion inherits the bases loaded and one out.

Charlotte 3, Arkansas 2 - Middle 8th Inning

The Razorbacks have not had the timely hit today. Luke Bonfield reached on a one-out single in the eighth, but Dominic Fletcher flied out to center and Jordan McFarland popped up to the first baseman in foul ground to end the inning. It will be up to Heston Kjerstad, Grant Koch and Carson Shaddy to keep the game going in the ninth.

Jake Reindl will pitch the bottom of the eighth for the Razorbacks.

Charlotte 3, Arkansas 2 - End 7th Inning

Charlotte has been good today with two outs and with runners in scoring position, and a two-out hit with a runner on second has given the 49ers the lead in the seventh.

Zack Smith reached on a nine-pitch at-bat against Kole Ramage, singling to right on a 3-2 pitch. Charlotte bunted Smith over. Hunter Jones appeared to bunt fair on a 0-1 pitch and Grant Koch forced out Smith at second, but the home plate umpire ruled Koch barehanded the ball in foul ground. Jones' next bunt attempt went back to Ramage, who appeared to have a chance for the force at second, but he went to first instead.

Tommy Bullock singled with two outs to score Smith. Eric Cole's throw to the plate was way off line. The inning ended when Koch caught Bullock trying to steal second.

Charlotte is outhitting Arkansas 8-5. The Razorbacks have stranded six.

Arkansas 2, Charlotte 2 - End 6th Inning

Charlotte's three-hole hitter Jackson Mims doubled to lead off the inning and scored on Drew Ober's one-out single to center field to tie the game. The inning ended when Dominick Cammarata grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.

The run came off Jacob Kostyshock, who was working his first inning. Charlotte is outhitting Arkansas 6-5.

Arkansas 2, Charlotte 1 - End 5th Inning

Jackson Rutledge pitched a scoreless inning in his first appearance his March 4. Charlotte got a base hit on a fluke play when Rutledge tried to field a ball, but it deflected off the end of his glove and into right field.

Arkansas 2, Charlotte 1 - End 4th Inning

Luke Bonfield reached on a throwing error and Dominic Fletcher singled to lead off the inning, but the Razorbacks couldn't push anyone across in the fourth. Bonfield made a base running mistake for the first out, then Heston Kjerstad flied out and Grant Koch lined out to end the inning. It looked like Koch's ball would drop for a hit, but it was right at the shortstop.

Charlotte had three straight two-out hits against Bryce Bonnin in the bottom of the inning. Dominick Cammarata's RBI single to left scored Harris Yett. Zack Smith struck out on a 93 mph, 0-2 fastball on the outside corner to strand two 49ers.

Arkansas 2, Charlotte 0 - End 3rd Inning

Barrett Loseke worked another hitless inning in the third, which likely will end his day. He has eight strikeouts, a career high.

The Razorbacks put another runner on in the top of the inning when Jax Biggers singled with one out. Eric Cole and Casey Martin each flied out, though, to strand him.

Arkansas 2, Charlotte 0 - End 2nd Inning

Heston Kjerstad launched a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the inning. That was Kjerstad's fourth home run this season and the Razorbacks' 40th.

Barrett Loseke has looked good today. He has struck out six of the seven batters he has faced. He worked around a walk in the bottom of the inning.

Arkansas 0, Charlotte 0 - End 1st Inning

The Razorbacks ran two counts full in the top of the first but didn't put any runners on. Jax Biggers popped up to the infield on a 3-2 pitch, Eric Cole grounded out to the pitcher and Casey Martin struck out looking at a 3-2 pitch to end the inning.

Barrett Loseke had a strong first inning, striking out all three batters he faced. He had to throw nine pitches in his first at-bat of the game and needed 20 in the inning.

The wind is blowing out pretty hard at Hayes Stadium. The temperatures are in the 40s.
