Hogs' fourth-quarter rally falls short to LSU

Arkansas defenders tackle LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire during a game Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018, in Fayetteville.

The University of Arkansas didn't seem to get off its bye week until the fourth quarter, and one quarter of good play was not enough to topple No. 7 LSU.

Playing in their first game in 14 days, and last home game of the season, the Hogs were defeated 24-17 by LSU on Saturday night at Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville. The Hogs (2-8, 0-6) will try to earn their first SEC victory next Saturday at Mississippi State.

Arkansas did not cross the 100-yard barrier for total offense until 14 minutes were left in the game. At the end of the third quarter, the Hogs had 91 yards on 43 plays; LSU had 261 yards on 49 plays and a 24-3 lead.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire ran for a 13-yard TD for a 21-3 lead with 9:44 left in the third quarter. LSU added a field goal for a 24-3 edge with under four minutes left in the third quarter.

The Hogs scored their first TD on QB Ty Storey's 11-yard pass to TE Cheyenne O'Grady. The extra point made it 24-10 with 12:37 left in the game.

The Razorbacks allowed the Tigers to move 30 yards before forcing a punt, allowing the Hogs to take over at the LSU 10. On the first snap of the Hogs' possession, Storey threw an interception to Kary Vincent at the 50-yard line with 9:51 left.

The Razorbacks stopped LSU on fourth and 1 from the UA 25, and the offense got rolling. Storey hit on a 20-yard pass to Jared Cornelius, and an upsportsmanlike conduct penalty by the Tigers moved the Hogs to the LSU 32. On second and 10, Storey found O'Grady again, this time for a 32-yard TD to cut the deficit to 24-17 with 5:27 remaining.

The Hogs were positioned for a stop on third and 6 at the LSU 45, but QB Joe Burrow beat the Hogs' blitz with a 14-yard slant to Derrick Dillon for a first down. A 16-yard scramble by Burrow got the ball to the Arkansas 25, and RB Nick Brossette moved LSU to the Arkansas 5 on runs of 2 and 18 yards. LSU was able to run out the clock.

LSU finished with 359 yards to Arkansas' 216.

LSU dominated the first half against the Razorbacks.

After the teams exchanged three punts, LSU started on the Arkansas 40. On the first play from scrimmage, Burrow hit WR Justin Jefferson for a 7-0 edge with 7:30 left in the first quarter.

Arkansas would gain just 8 yards on its next three possessions. The Razorbacks’ defense would stop LSU twice, but with 12:36 left in the first half, the Tigers would begin a 14-play, 77-yard drive. LSU converted a pair of third downs, eventually scoring on Brossette’s 12-yard TD run for a 14-0 lead with 5:24 remaining.

The Razorbacks gained 34 yards on their first seven possessions.

LSU gave the Hogs a hand, as Burrow fumbled and Arkansas recovered at the LSU 33 with 21 second left in the first half.

Storey connected with Cornelius for a 27-yard gain — just 7 yards less than the previous first-half output — with 6 seconds left at the LSU 6. After an incomplete pass, Limpert’s 24-yard FG pulled the Hogs to within 14-3 at the half.

Storey was 8-of-13 passing for 39 yards in the first half. Rakeem Boyd ran 7 times for 22 yards. Six Hogs caught passes, but only Cornelius (27 yards) and O’Grady (11) had more than 2 yards receiving at the half.
