Whaley to miss multiple games with ankle surgery

Arkansas running back Devwah Whaley (21) carries the ball during a game against Ole Miss on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018, in Little Rock.

— Arkansas running back Devwah Whaley will miss at least two games, and possibly more, after undergoing ankle surgery Monday.

Razorbacks coach Chad Morris confirmed the surgery but did not provide further details, other than to say Whaley wasn't expected to be available to play again until sometime in November. Arkansas plays Tulsa and Vanderbilt the next two weekends, then has a week off prior to a Nov. 10 game against LSU.

Whaley was injured at the end of a 13-yard run early in the third quarter of Arkansas' 37-33 loss to Ole Miss last Saturday. Whaley, a junior, already has missed two games due to a concussion he suffered during the third quarter of a game at Auburn on Sept. 22.

In five appearances this season, Whaley has rushed for 298 yards and two touchdowns on 65 carries. He started the Razorbacks' first four games of the season, but during his absence was replaced by Rakeem Boyd, who has rushed for more than 100 yards in consecutive weeks.

Boyd had 109 yards on seven carries and 36 yards on two receptions during the Ole Miss loss, but was taken out of the game with a back injury during the second quarter. Morris said Monday that Boyd should be able to play in Saturday's game against Tulsa.

Morris would not say whether quarterback Ty Storey was in concussion protocol, but said he hopes to know more about him sometime today. Storey was taken from the Ole Miss game after taking a big hit on the sideline during the fourth quarter.

Morris indicated the team's Monday schedule was altered some this week because the University of Arkansas was out of class for fall break, which affected how much he knew about injured players at his noon press conference.

Running back T.J. Hammonds (ankle) and defensive lineman McTelvin Agim (knee) are expected to be OK for the Tulsa game, Morris said.
