Boit individual champ, Hogs 2nd at SEC meet

Arkansas' Gilbert Boit leads the pack during the Chile Pepper Festival on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018, in Fayetteville.

Arkansas junior Gilbert Boit was the individual champion, but the Razorbacks failed to win the team title for the first time since 2009 at the SEC cross country meet Friday.

Boii finished the 8,000-meter race in 22:20.13 at Indian Pines Golf Club in Auburn, Ala. Arkansas’ Cameron Griffith was third in 22:51.22 and Ryan Murphy was ninth in 23:10.76.

But the Razorbacks’ 44 points were eight behind Ole Miss, which won its first ever SEC championship with a scoring finish of 4-6-7-8-11. Arkansas' scorers finished 1-3-9-14-17.

Arkansas had won eight straight titles and 42 of its past 44 conference cross country meets dating to its time in the Southwest Conference. The Razorbacks won 17 consecutive SWC meets from 1974-90 and the first 17 meets after joining the SEC in 1991.

Boit, a transfer from Tennessee Tech, is Arkansas’ 15th individual champion at the SEC meet and first since Alex George in 2016.
