Arkansas among potential destinations for Mack

Cam Mack

Salt Lake (Utah) Community College freshman point guard Cam Mack has taken one perceived favorite school off his list, but Arkansas remains among his possibilities.

Mack (6-3, 170), who averaged 19.1 points, 7.5 assists and 5.9 rebounds per game last season, is a St. John’s signee who asked for and was granted his release after Red Storm coach Chris Mullin resigned.

He had been scheduled to visit Nebraska (April 26-28) and Texas A&M (May 3-5) and is also still considering Arkansas, Arizona, Gonzaga and St. John’s, who hired former Razorbacks coach Mike Anderson last Friday.

“I am not visiting Texas A&M anymore,” noted Mack, a College Station native who will have three years to play three at his next stop. “Nebraska is the only visit set up now. Maybe Arkansas.”

Mack, who originally signed with Stephen F. Austin and left after a semester without playing a game, said he intends to have his decision made sometime around May 11.

Nebraska may have the edge with former St. John’s assistant Matt Abdelmassih now on new Cornhuskers coach Fred Hoiberg’s staff and the fact that he has a friend committed to Nebraska in Western Nebraska Community College shooting guard Jervay Green (6-3, 195).

Mack is ranked as the third-best 2019 junior college prospect and Green the eighth-best according to JUCOrecruiting.com.

“He’s what everybody’s looking for,” SLCC coach Todd Phillips told the New York Post. “Not only can he get he get his own, he can see the floor. He’s not a guy that’s all about points. I think he’s an elite point guard. He can really get to the basket, very explosive, athletic, great first step. He just goes by guys. He’s probably one of the two best point guards in the country at junior college.”

Mack had 211 assists to 77 turnovers this past season while also coming up with 75 steals and a team-leading 14 blocks.

He shot 45.6 percent (188-of-412) from the field, 33.7 percent (56-of-166) from 3-point range and 64.6 percent (102-of-158) from the free throw line as a redshirt freshman for SLCC.

“I’m looking for a place that will just let me have the ball in any hands,” Mack said. My strength is my playmaking and my ballhandling. Definitely being a consistent shooter is my weakness.”

The Razorbacks are heavily recruiting Phoenix Hillcrest Prep junior guards Kyree Walker (6-6, 200) and Dalen Terry (6-6, 170). Walker is considering reclassifying to 2019.

Arkansas is also known to be on the final five list of Daytona (Fla.) State power forward Khadim Sy (6-10, 240), who is ranked as the No. 7 prospect, per JUCOrecruiting.com.

New Arkansas coach Eric Musselman has signed one prospect during the April 17-May 15 late signing period so far in UNC-Wilmington graduate transfer forward Jeantal Cylla (6-7, 215).

The Razorbacks are also scheduled to have a pair of upcoming official visitors in George Mason graduate transfer guard Jaire Grayer (6-5, 200) on April 28-30 and High Point graduate transfer guard Jahaad Proctor on May 3-5.

Adam Zagoria of the New York Times reported Tuesday that St. John’s wing LJ Figueroa (6-6, 195) has set up a visit to Arkansas.

Figueroa, who has not decided to transfer for sure yet, is en route to Western Kentucky for a visit, per Zagoria, and may also visit Georgia and Miami.
