Razorbacks 8th at SECs

The No. 37 University of Arkansas men’s golf team shot a 1-over par 281 to tie for eighth place with No. 27 Texas A&M after one round of the SEC championships.

The Razorbacks were led by freshman Julian Perico, who carded a 4-under par 66 on the par 70 Seaside course at Sea Island Golf Club at St. Simons, Ga.

No. 13 Auburn and No. 16 Georgia held the first-round lead at 8 under, followed by Ole Miss (-5), Kentucky (-5), No. 4 Vanderbilt (-3), No. 15 South Carolina (-1) and No. 22 Tennessee (even).

The top eight teams after three rounds of stroke play will compete in match play beginning on Saturday.

Perico, who had four birdies and 14 pars, is in third place, behind co-leaders Will Gordon of Vanderbilt and Trent Phillips of Georgia, who entered as the league’s top two golfers.

Arkansas junior Mason Overstreet, the NCAA runner-up two years ago, shot 1 under par and is tied for 15th. Juniors Tyson Reeder and Luis Garza had Arkansas’ other counting scores at 3 over par, and junior William Buhl had the non-counting score with a 5 over.

No. 11 LSU is just outside the top eight with a team score of 2 over par, followed by Missouri (+9), Mississippi State (+10), Florida (+11) and No. 25 Alabama (+12).

The Razorbacks will tee off at 7:30 a.m. today with Tennessee and Texas A&M on the first hole.
