TV, schools have input on super regional start dates

— Super regional dates and start times will be unveiled Tuesday by the NCAA.

The announcement will be made at 7 a.m. on the NCAA's website and social media accounts, said J.D. Hamilton, an assistant director with the NCAA.

The super regionals are best-of-three-game series played at eight host sites. Four super regionals will begin Friday and four more will begin Saturday.

Arkansas will host Ole Miss in the Fayetteville Super Regional.

Hamilton said the NCAA considers several factors when deciding when super regionals will begin. Among the considerations are input from ESPN about which matchups are most desirable for TV, and input from schools about what is happening on host campuses that might affect hotel availabilities in their cities.

For instance, the annual Walmart shareholders meeting that draws thousands of out-of-town visitors will be held at Bud Walton Arena on the University of Arkansas campus Friday morning.

Other considerations include student health, Hamilton said, notably whether one of the participating teams played a regional game on Monday and needs an additional day of rest.

Last season, Arkansas played South Carolina in a super regional that began on Saturday. The Gamecocks had played a regional at East Carolina that did not end until the Monday before, and had to travel home before traveling nearly 1,000 miles to Fayetteville.

Ole Miss won a home regional Sunday night and will have relatively short travel to Fayetteville.

Hamilton said the NCAA attempts to coordinate super regional start dates with start dates the following week at the College World Series.

Last season, Arkansas was in the same bracket with Florida, Texas and Texas Tech at the College World Series, and all four teams began their super regional on the same day.

There are six other regional champions that could be in the same bracket with Arkansas or Ole Miss at the College World Series. Among them are Texas Tech, LSU and Florida State, which won regionals Sunday.

Regionals have yet to be decided between UCLA-Loyola Marymount, Creighton-Michigan and Oklahoma State-UConn on Arkansas' side of the bracket.
