Lost weekend

Published: Monday, September 24, 2007 PRINT E-MAIL

Arrested Sunday afternoon by Fayetteville police on a forgery charge, University of Arkansas sophomore running back Michael Smith has been suspended indefinitely from the Razorback football team, coach Houston Nutt announced Sunday evening.

Smith’s suspension, Nutt said, at the minimum will include Saturday’s 6 p. m. game with North Texas at Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

“ I have suspended Michael Smith for actions off the field that are clearly not acceptable for anyone, especially a member of this team, ” Nutt said in a statement issued by the UA sports information department. “ He will not play this weekend and additional actions will be considered after we have an opportunity to fully review the situation. ”

Smith, 20, and a native of Tal- lahassee, Fla., was arrested on a second-degree felony charge of forgery and theft by receiving. According to a Fayetteville police report, Smith is alleged to have used a credit card reported stolen for three transactions at two different gas stations over the weekend. The transactions reportedly totaled $ 96. 34. According to the Fayetteville police report, Smith denied knowing the card was stolen. He said he was given the card by a friend, reported in the police report to be Micah Kirschbaum, to pay back a debt. Kirschbaum was arrested Sept. 18 on a charge of fraudulent use of a credit card, according to Fayetteville police. A reserve running back behind Darren McFadden and Felix Jones, Smith had played all three games for the 1-2 Razorbacks gaining 91 yards in 16 carries. He had 24 yards in five carries in last Saturday’s 42-29 loss to Kentucky but his fumble was returned for a 66-yard touchdown by Kentucky cornerback Trevard Lindley just 26 seconds before the half. Brandon Barnett, the sophomore junior college transfer from Texarkana, may be the top reserve tailback Saturday behind McFadden and Jones.

Un-Tucked An injury will sideline freshman receiver Crosby Tuck for the remainder of the season. Tuck broke his arm during Saturday night’s second half. Tuck has caught a pass every game with 3 catches for 103 yards including a 42 and 40-yard touchdowns against Troy and Alabama and a 20-yard catch to the Kentucky 35 just before Smith’s fumble. Because Tuck’s seasonending injury happened just one-third into the season, he should be eligible to apply for a hardship restoring his freshman eligibility next season.

Other injuries Senior linebacker Weston Dacus (slight concussion ), flanker Robert Johnson (toe ) and split end London Crawford (ribs ) were injured during last Saturday’s game but likely should be ready to play against North Texas, Nutt said Sunday. Four and counting Senior split end Marcus Monk likely will miss his fourth straight game as he continues rehabbing from two arthroscopic surgeries since injuring his knee during a Aug. 9 practice. Nutt said he hopes Monk can play some in the Oct. 6 nonconference game with Tennessee-Chattanooga in Little Rock before the Razorbacks’ next SEC game, Oct. 13 against Auburn in Fayetteville. With Tuck, Monk and John Aaron Rees (early-season knee injury ) sidelined, Nutt said the Razorbacks must rely on junior Chris Baker of Osceola, Reggie Fish, Camden’s Rod Coleman, Marques Wade and Carlton Salters to join Crawford, Johnson and Lucas Miller in the receiver rotation mainly used against Kentucky. All-time leader Felix Jones became the all-time Razorback kick return leader. His 108 yards on 2 returns against Kentucky boosted the Razorback junior’s career totals to 1, 405 yards on 48 returns, surpassing the 1, 321 yards on 61 returns by former Razorback DeCori Birmingham. Jones’s 29. 3 career average per return currently is the all-time tops in the SEC.
