ARKANSAS 96, CAMPBELLSVILLE 56 : 'A win is a win' Published: Wednesday, November 07, 2007 PRINT E-MAIL The Razorbacks again won an exhibition game by a wide margin, but their second win didn’t come close to the first one with their coach. Tuesday night’s 96-56 victory over Campbellsville (Ky. ) at Walton Arena completed the two-game exhibition season that started with last Friday night’s 117-43 rout of Division II school West Florida. Coach John Pelphrey wants his Hogs turning their turnovers around before Arkansas starts its regular season at 7 p. m. Friday at home against Wofford. “ It wasn’t the same effort as the first exhibition, ” Pelphrey said. “ Our attitude and effort was terrific in the first one, it wasn’t in this one. Twenty-one turnovers, that’s a team not ready to play. You don’t turn it over 21 times against a team that didn’t press us one second. ”
Taking a 30-4 lead, the Razorbacks jumped on Campbellsville, still reeling from losing NAIA All-American Zach Allender to a knee injury in last week’s exhibition loss to Western Kentucky. However, UA’s starting five so lethargically opened the second half after a 50-24 lead that Pelphrey yanked them wholesale which allowed Campbellsville to make some inroads. “ Last week we played hard, ” Pelphrey said. “ We didn’t have the rag-tag we saw tonight. We were looking for an enthusiastic effort we didn’t get. I don’t want to watch guys slop around, so we’ll chuck guys in there until we see some effort. ” Maybe it was hard to keep the intensity, opening 30-4 ? “ I’m not buying that, ” Pelphrey said. “ I’m not going to bail those guys out. With the experience level we’ve supposedly got, we are playing for a bigger picture. ” Sophomore star guard Patrick Beverley led the Razorbacks with 20 points, hitting 7 of 9 from the field, but he got yanked with the other starters after the sluggish second-half start. “ We came out kind of dry and they played as a team and fought really hard, ” Beverley said. “ A win is a win, but if we had played a better team, we probably would have lost. ” Senior point guard Gary Ervin played turnover-free on a night others erred, but he got the early second half hook, too. “ When you are not giving [Pelphrey ] what he wants, that’s what happens, ” Ervin said. “ We are a veteran ballclub returning five starters so if we are not giving him what he wants, he’s going to make an example. ” Ervin scored 13 points and had six assists. “ I thought Gary did OK, ” Pelphrey said. “ But he was good. We always tell Gary, if you are great, great, but don’t be bad. We don’t want the stock market. I thought tonight he was consistently good. ” Backup center Darian Townes, acknowledging he’s in “ much better shape” than previous seasons, had a nice 20 minutes with 18 points (8 of 9 from the field ) while forward Michael Washington scored 11 in 11 minutes. Sonny Weems scored 12 but struggled with a 4 for 15 shooting night. Campbellsville guard Marcus Nicks led all scorers with 23 points.
