RAZORBACKS 67, ROADRUNNERS 42 : Beverley leads Hogs' board bonanza in win over UTSA Published: Thursday, December 13, 2007 PRINT E-MAIL After collecting splinters the first six minutes, Patrick Beverley’s 10-points-13-rebounds double-double plus five assists vs. zero turnovers put the wood to the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners. Senior point guard Gary Ervin (17 points ), Beverley and forward Charles Thomas (10 points and 7 boards ) paced Arkansas to a 67-42 victory before 11, 091 weathering a rainy Wednesday night to trek to Walton Arena. The victory in Arkansas ’ first game since Dec. 3 and final exams, ups the Razorbacks to 8-1 going into their first true road game 2 p. m. Saturday at Oklahoma on ESPN 2. UTSA falls to 4-3. Not starting for the only the second time as a Razorback, sophomore Preseason All-SEC guard Beverley said he was benched by head coach John Pelphrey because of a “ lackadaisical” game day practice.
“ The coach made the correct choice, ” Beverley said. “ That’s the humble thing in basketball, the bench. No matter who you are, the bench kind of hurts. It won’t happen again. ” Beverley only hit 3 of 10 from the field but his shooting didn’t concern Pelphrey. It was all about Beverley not revving in Wednesday’s practice with the motor Pelphrey has come to expect. “ The last thing I look at is how many points he’s got, ” Pelphrey said. “ Shooting and scoring is fickle, but he did a lot of things that are very helpful to our basketball team and he did them tonight. ” And he didn’t in the practice, Pelphrey said. “ Patrick has set a standard for himself, how he brings it every single day, ” Pelphrey said. “ But he didn’t have it. He wasn’t focused at the game day practice. We let him get away with some things like a missed shot here or there, but he’s also held to a higher standard with things we demand. “ He can miss 10 shots in a row as long as he’s Patrick Beverley with his hard hat and lunch pail because it’s infectious. But when he’s not, it can go the other way. ” Pelphrey said he “ had no doubt, ” how Beverley would respond when he first went in at 13: 56 of the first half. He only stands 6-1 but grabbed those 13 rebounds. “ Rebounding doesn’t have anything to do with size other than the size of your heart, ” Pelphrey said. Ervin, Beverley and Darian Townes scored 25 offthe-bench points in Arkansas’ 35-18 first half. The starters, with Beverley among them, opened the second half outscoring UTSA 16-5 for a 51-23 lead before the Hogs slopped around. Arkansas committed 20 turnovers, just 2 less than UTSA, and committed 20 personal fouls. “ We had a problem fouling too much, ” Pelphrey said. “ We are going to have to play much better than that and we are going to have to take care of the ball better. I am happy to win but I can’t say that I am happy the way we played. Not enough sharing the basketball and taking care of the basketball. “ We lost control of our emotions and defensively I thought we shut it down the last 12 minutes of the first half. ” Coached by Brooks Thompson, whom Pelphrey coached his first year as a grad assistant at Oklahoma State, the Roadrunners were led by forward Travis Gabbidon’s 11 points. Arkansas outrebounded UTSA, 43-23.
