HILL OF A SHOT : Senior's lone basket lifts Hogs over No. 4 Vols in SEC semis

Published: Sunday, March 16, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

ATLANTA - The most improbable Hog of all hit the biggest shot of the season thus far Saturday as the Arkansas Razorbacks knocked off the No. 4 Tennessee Vols, 92-91, in the semifinals of the Southeastern Conference Tournament at Alexander Memorial Arena.

It was Steven Hill's lone basket of the game, but the 7-foot senior defensive specialist's shot was true when the Razorbacks needed it most.

His 10-foot turnaround jumper looked awkward with Vol Wayne Chism guarding him and Patrick Beverley at his feet, but it proved beautiful to the Razorbacks as it swished through the net with 5. 3 seconds left.

" Obviously, I didn't expect to take the shot, " Hill said. " I don't expect to take any shot. But I got the ball and knew the time was running out and it went in. "

Arkansas coach John Pelphrey said Hill's time came and he made the most of it.

" I tell them you never know when, " Pelphrey said. " When Steven got his chance to do his thing, he did it.

" The best thing about this is the celebration we had in the locker room. When Steven walked in, they just covered him up. That's the coolest thing. Being a team and enjoying that locker room. "

Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl congratulated Arkansas and gave credit to Hill.

" It's a wonderful, wonderful thing for him to hit that shot and them to advance, " Pearl said. " He's a senior. That's great for him. But they beat us the way they beat us all day long. Everyone else was covered. He was the last option, and he made the shot. "

Tennessee sharpshooter Chris Lofton had a shot to win the game, but his normally deft touch was off.

" I had a great look at the end, " Lofton said. " It was a perfect setting, but it didn't go in. It didn't work out tonight. "

The Razorbacks (22-10 ) advance to the SEC Tournament title game at 2: 30 p.m. (CST ) to face the winner of the Georgia-Mississippi State semifinal game.

The Vols (29-4 ) now head back to Knoxville, Tenn., to await their NCAA Tourney bid and seeding position.

Pelphrey said the Razorbacks played tough for the second night in a row, which is his highest praise for a team. He cautioned that his Hogs can't get too high after the big win.

" When I played at Kentucky, we took every team's best shot, " Pelphrey said. " Most of the time we won, but when we lost, the other team usually lost their next game. We're Arkansas. We don't want to be like that.

" We need to back up a great performance with another great performance. "

And it was a team-wide great performance. The Hogs did the job inside, outrebounding the Vols, 34-22, with Charles Thomas leading the way with 10 rebounds and Patrick Beverley with 7.

Arkansas' 13-6 offensive rebound advantage proved pivotal as Arkansas' big men garnered several key stickbacks.

Thomas was huge for the Hogs with a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Darian Townes added 16 points inside, Beverley posted 17 points inside and out, and Stefan Welsh had 12 on four 3-pointers.

Gary Ervin scored 9 points, had 7 assists and only one turnover in 34 minutes on the floor.

Michael Washington came off the bench late in the game and drew a key charge that allowed Arkansas to tie the game at 76 with 6: 04 to play after falling behind 73-64 with 8: 50 to play.

" I challenged our guys, " Pelphrey said of the timeout with his Hogs trailing by 9. " I told them to go out and congratulate Tennessee because we weren't guarding them. But I also told them, if we will guard them, we can win this game. "

All-SEC performer Sonny Weems scored only 7 points, but he slammed down a big alley-oop basket with 3: 30 to play to tie the game at 83 and Ervin followed it with a key 3-pointer.

" Sonny was there when we needed him most, " Pelphrey said. " Sonny's our toughest player. When things are at their worst he never changes. "

Townes tipped in a Thomas miss for a 90-89 Arkansas lead, but JaJuan Smith returned the lead to the Vols with an easy basket.

Then Hill made the shot that Hog fans will remember every time his name is mentioned in the future.

" Let's be real, " Pelphrey said. " I love our guys, but we are not a Top 4 basketball team. It took everything we've got to beat that team.

" Tennessee is a great team. They are the best in our league and the best in the country. It took all we had to win this one. "

Pearl said his Vols played hard and well but did not have what it took to defeat the Hogs after shredding them, 93-71, on Feb. 13 at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn.

" That was a great game. As good a game that was played in the country with two talented teams, " Pearl said. " They were picked to win the West. Those guys got the ball, backed us down and scored or got the foul. Thomas and Townes were big. They did a great job of getting the ball inside. "

Arkansas had 13 turnovers and shot 55. 2 percent from the field.

" We couldn't stop Arkansas, " Pearl said. " They were making shots. They have very athletic guards, but we couldn't turn them over, which was the key in our last two wins over Arkansas. "

Lofton led the Vols with 25 points, followed by Tyler Smith with 24, JaJuan Smith with 18 and Chism with 11.

While the loss hurt, Pearl said his squad will be resilient.

" That Tennessee team carried the banner for the conference all year long, " Pearl said. " We have time to get them turned around and focused. "

However, the Razorbacks know if they win this afternoon, they will be the team to cut down the nets and bring home an SEC Tournament championship banner.

The Razorbacks are now 20-0 in games that they have led at halftime.
