UA FOOTBALL PRACTICE : Offense piles up the yardage at spring football scrimmage Published: Sunday, April 20, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL The usual suspects offensively performed with the experience you would expect in the Razorbacks' scrimmage Saturday morning at Reynolds Razorback Stadium. However the defense's novice little big man stole the show Saturday. Darrell Glasper, the 5-8 walk-on cornerback transferring last fall to Arkansas after being an unused hometown walkon for LSU, intercepted two passes by senior starting quarterback Casey Dick. Glasper has been making " who is that guy ? " plays throughout spring drills. He's operated first-team corner since senior Jamar Love bruised his quadriceps in last Thursday's practice. Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino says he wasn't surprised to see Glasper picking off a pair and also making some big tackles in the running game.
" They [defensive coordinator Willy Robinson and cornerbacks coach Lorenzo Ward ] have been pushing him from Day 1, " Petrino said. " One thing he is quick and smart and today what he did was keep his eyes back in the backfield. The thing you worry about there is the size matchup, when somebody is going to find that size. " Indeed, 6-2 wide receiver London Crawford did isolate on the 5-8 Glasper to nab an 11-yard TD pass from Casey Dick. Other than the two Glasper picks and a couple of near pickoffs by others, Casey Dick had a big day always quarterbacking the first offense against the first defense. He completed 26 of 38 passes for 309 yards including touchdowns to wide receivers Crawford, 9 catches for 111 yards with two TDs from Casey Dick, and Carlton Salters, 9 catches for 91 yards. Tight end D. J. Williams, 5 catches for 86 yards, and Lucas Miller, 4 catches for 61 yards, also had big days. Arkansas' littlest running back, 5-7, 173-pound senior Michael Smith, was the biggest rusher 142 yards and 2 touchdowns on 21 carries. Smith only logged one play in last week's scrimmage before he was injured, so he felt he was making up for time. " I wanted to make sure we came out this week and established the run after we didn't really move it as well last week, " Smith said. " I'm glad this week is over with. We get a couple of days to rest before coming back out here Tuesday. " Smith by ground and Casey Dick by air complemented the Arkansas offense Saturday. " I like what I saw from Casey, " Petrino said. " I thought he took a step forward. Obviously I didn't like the interception. But he understood the progressions and the coverage looks and distributed the ball. He really made some strides in what we want to execute. " Like everyone, Casey Dick is playing for a new head coach, but he's also playing for his fourth different offense under four different offensive coordinators. " This year is the most comfortable we've ever been putting in a new style of offense, " Dick said. Petrino said the offense showed a third-down comfort level not seen in last week's 164-play scrimmage. " Offensively our third downs improved a lot from last time, " Petrino said. " Last scrimmage the defense got after the offense, but the offense won the third down battle today. Our tight ends (Williams, Andrew Davie and Springdale's Ben Cleveland ) continue to be good football players and I'm impressed with our secondary. They keep getting better and better. " Redshirt freshman quarterback Nathan Dick, Casey's brother, worked ahead of Alex Mortensen on the second team Saturday and had a nice day quarterbacking against the second defense. Nathan Dick was 12 of 21 for 146 yards and threw TD passes to wideouts Lucas Miller and Shiloh Christian alum Crosby Tuck. " Nathan the last week and a half has really improved his ability to throw the ball, " Petrino said. " Coach [Garrick ] McGee [the quarterbacks coach ] is doing a nice job with his technique and he's getting the ball out of his hand quicker. " Also against the second defense, Mortensen completed 8 of 20 for 107 yards. Mortensen was intercepted one by cornerback Ramon Broadway and fumbled away one snap but also threw a 5-yard TD pass to Cleveland after throwing a 17-yarder to Cleveland who ran over a tackler. It was Cleveland's best day. He's still recovering from toe surgery and redshirted last season because of injuries. " A little hard on him not being 100 percent yet, " Petrino said. " But we've got to keep him going. It's the best he's felt. Hopefully by August he'll be 100 percent. " With quick whistles keeping the quarterbacks from getting hit, Petrino acknowledged it's difficult to evaluate the pass rush. He has praised the speed of defensive ends Adrian Davis, Damario Ambrose, Antwan Robinson and Jake Bequette but admitted, " The inside guys [defensive tackles ] are the area that is still bothering me. " First-team cornerback Isaac Madison and second-team offensive guard Wade Grayson of Harrison were among those unable to finish the scrimmage because of injuries. Sophomore placekicker Alex Tejada of Springale closed the scrimmage making 5 of 8 straight field goal attempts. Tejada made 29 and 37-yarders, missed two 46-yarders and a 51-yarder then hit from 51, 48 and 50.
