UA's Chavez named to SEC All-Freshman Team

Published: Sunday, May 11, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

Arkansas golfer Sam Chavez was named to the 2008 Southeastern Conference All-Freshman Team, it was announced by the league office Thursday. Chavez and seven other golfers are a part of the conference's first-ever men's golf freshman team.

Chavez appeared in the UA lineup in the final seven events of the regular season and posted a 74. 95 scoring average through 21 rounds of competition. The Hillsborough, Calif., native tallied three top-20 finishes, including a season-best result at the Border Olympics where he fired a second-round 65, tied for second place and helped the Razorbacks to the event team title.

The eight-under-par 208 total he shot at the Border Olympics also represented Chavez's season low 54-hole score. His other top-20 results came at the Callaway Invitational and Duck Invitational where he earned shares of 20 th and 15 th place, respectively.

Chavez is joined on the allfreshman team by Andrew Loupe, John Peterson and Clayton Rotz of LSU, Harris English and Russell Henley of Georgia, Ole Miss' Jonathan Randolph and Robin Wingardh of Tennessee. Last week, Chavez's teammate, Andrew Landry, was named an All-SEC second team selection.

Arkansas will compete May 15-17 as the No. 14 seed at the NCAA Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio, on the par-71, 7, 419-yard Scarlet Golf Course.
