Lady'Backs third after Day 2 at SECs

Published: Saturday, May 17, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

Denise Bargiachi and Miranda Walker scored 10 points in the 10 K for Arkansas Lady Razorback track and field on Day 2 of the SEC Championships, in Auburn, Ala.

Arkansas sits in a tie for third with 15 points in the team standings after two days of competition and advanced one harrier to Sunday's finals in Friday night's prelims.

In the front pack for the entire 10, 000-meter race, Bargiachi battled in a race that was not suited for her running style. With her running partner Catherine White sidelined with an illness, she was on her own in a tactical pace. Holding strong, she finished third with a time of 34: 30. 99. Walker earned a fifth-place finish and four points with her time of 35: 13. 26.

Paige Farrell won her prelim heat of the 800 meters. She finished third overall with a quick clocking of 2: 06. 85. She automatically advanced to Sunday's finals with her prelim win.

Peter-Gaye Beckford finished fifth in the heptathlon with 4, 990 points. She started Day 2 of the event with a win in the long jump. Her mark of 20-4. 5, good for 915 points, is a personal best and improves her regionalqualifying mark. She also set a new school record for the heptathlon long jump with her leap.

Next, at the javelin, she again took an event win, her second of the day and third of the two-day competition. She marked a toss of 134-6, good for 686 points.

Michelle Rossio was the first Lady'Back to put points on the board. She finished eighth in the hammer throw with a toss of ©-9.

Etienne Chaplin also completed Day 2 of the heptathlon. She finished ninth with 4, 588 points which is remarkable considering her no height in the high jump on Thursday. On day two, Chaplin was fifth in the long jump (18-9. 25 ) and second to Beckford in the javelin (119-9 ). She ended the day with a clocking of 2: 27. 01 in the 800 meters, good for a fifth-place finish and 731 points.

Jennifer Fall finished 12 th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1: 03. 66. Dominque Lauderdale finished 24 th in the 200 meters with a time of 24. 87. Neither advanced to the finals.
