Former UA quarterback Jones arrested

Published: Friday, July 11, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

Former Arkansas Razorbacks quarterback Matt Jones was arrested on a felony drug charge shortly after midnight Thursday in Fayetteville.

Fayetteville police also arrested former Razorbacks tight end Jared Hicks and Benjamin Cook of Tulsa, Okla., on misdemeanor charges.

All three were arrested while they were in a parked vehicle behind 313 W. Dickson St.

According to the police report, Jones, a Razorback from 2001-2004 and currently a wide receiver for the Jacksonville Jaguars, was arrested on a charge of possession of a controlled substance (cocaine ).

The report states that both Hicks, a UA letterman from 2002-2005, and Cook were arrested on charges of misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jones was released Thursday on $ 2, 500 bond. He awaits an Aug. 11 arraignment date in Washington County Circuit Court.

Fayetteville police reported Jones in possession of 6 grams of cocaine and “ a Footlocker card with suspected cocaine residue and two print cards with cocaine, ” according to the report.

At 12: 41 a. m. Thursday, two officers reported observing Jones sitting in a white Toyota 4 Runner with a white, powdery substance in his lap holding a credit card he was allegedly using to chop and scrape the powder. The police reported asking Jones if the white powder was cocaine and Jones replied, “ Yes. ”

Police said the substance was “ field tested positive ” for cocaine.

Jones, Hicks and Cook were handcuffed, arrested and transported to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Police reported also finding a black bag with a jar with “ possible marijuana residue” and that Cook “ stated that the jar and bag was his. ”

Police reported Hicks “ had a straw with white powdery residue behind his ear. ”

The felony charge Jones faces carries a possible sentence of three to 10 years and / or a fine of up to $ 10, 000.

However, 4 th Judicial District Prosecutor John Threet, noting Jones has no previous record, said, “ A typical, firsttime drug offender does not go to the pen. ”

Threet said typical sentencing options for a nonviolent, first-time offender on felony drug possession Cook Hicks charges normally include drug court or probation with counseling.

Also in Jones’ favor, police reported no evidence that would make Jones vulnerable to the more serious charge of “ intent to deliver. ”

Regarding commenting on Jones ’ NFL future with Jacksonville, Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver said the team currently is in a fact-finding mode.

“ We’re trying to investigate that now, ” Weaver told The Associated Press. “ We don’t have all the facts. We will comment on that once we have all the facts. ”

Houston Nutt, now the Ole Miss head coach but was Arkansas’ coach from 1998-2007 during Jones’ era of setting a SEC career rushing record for quarterbacks, said Thursday in Oxford, Miss., “ I am saddened. It’s a sad, sad day. ”

Jones has experienced an up-and-down career at Jacksonville. He caught 77 passes for 1, 075 yards and nine touchdowns in his first two pro seasons, but coach Jack Del Rio reportedly became disenchanted with Jones ’ practice habits and even deactivated him for three games last season.

Nutt and the Arkansas staff also were known to become frustrated with some of Jones’ practices but never as a game-day competitor and leader.

Jones set the SEC career quarterback rushing record with 2, 335 yards and also hit some key passes including a last-play touchdown to beat LSU in 2002 at Little Rock.

“ There’s a lot of good in Matt, ” Nutt said Thursday.

Scott F. Davis of the Northwest Arkansas Times contributed to this report.
