Razorbacks receiver arrested on DWI charge Published: Monday, July 28, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL Arkansas sophomore wide receiver Marques Wade was arrested by Fayetteville police on misdemeanor charges of driving while intoxicated and careless driving early Sunday morning. Wade, 19, was stopped by police after an officer observed him speeding in a parking lot and sliding to a stop at a stop sign on Stone Street, where he “ nearly” struck another police officer, according to a preliminary police report. Wade’s body had the “ odor of intoxicants, ” according to the report, and officers observed that his eyes were bloodshot. The UA sophomore denied he had been drinking but that he “ had smoked some marijuana earlier in the day, ” according to the report. The UA sophomore failed a field sobriety test and was transported to the Washington County Detention Cen- ter, where he provided a breathalyzer sample and registered a blood alcohol content of 0. 11 at 12: 13 a. m. on Sunday, according to the report. The legal limit in Arkansas is 0. 08. The underage limit is 0. 02.
Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino was aware of the arrest Sunday and was “ very upset about the situation and it will be dealt with, ” said Kevin Trainor, associate athletic director for media relations. Wade was booked at the Washington County Detention Center Sunday at 1: 10 a. m. and was released on $ 880 bond at 3: 19 a. m. He’s scheduled to appear Aug. 18 in Fayetteville District Court. The Ellenwood, Ga., native performed well in the spring, catching nine passes for 108 yards in three scrimmages. Wade, who logged no catches as a receiver last season, was listed as a starter on Arkansas ’ post-spring depth chart. Several Arkansas football players have had run-ins with the law since Petrino’s arrival as Arkansas’ head coach Dec. 11. Wade is the fourth Razorback to be arrested since March and third in the last 28 days. Linebacker Freddie Fairchild was charged March 24 with misdemeanor battery and false imprisonment of a woman, and was kicked off the team by Petrino on June 11. Linebacker Freddy Burton was charged with driving while intoxicated on June 29 and fellow linebacker Wendel Davis was charged with felony criminal mischief on July 1 after a traffic altercation near the UA campus. Burton is scheduled to appear in court today. The Razorbacks are scheduled to start fall practices on Aug. 4. Disciplinary problems have also been a problem recently for the Louisville football program, where Petrino coached from 2003 to 2006. Steve Kragthorpe, who took the reins as coach at Louisville after Petrino’s departure, said he inherited a slew of discipline issues from Petrino’s old team. Kragthorpe released as many as 12 of Petrino’s former players because of the issues, according to an article that appeared on ESPN. com on March 26. “ I was shocked, ” Kragthorpe said in the March report. “ I’ve never seen anything like this. ” Petrino addressed Kragthorpe’s comments and the Louisville disciplinary problems during his stop at SEC Media Days in Hoover, Ala., on Friday. “ We didn’t have discipline problem when I was there, ” Petrino said. “ Knock on wood. You always knock on wood on that, but we had players that were real focused, did a great job and went 41-9. And I think they returned 21 starters off of that Orange Bowl team. So, you know, I felt good about the way we left the program and the shape that we left the University of Louisville in. ” More Stories From: BRANDON MARCELLO · Hogs' recruiting class not highly rated, but helps frontcourt depth · Former Hog Beverley drafted traded to Heat · Fayetteville makes U.S. Soccer's first cut for World Cup · Jones works youth camp, awaits NFL call · Van Horn seeks to parlay UA's success into even more Yesterday's Most Popular 1.
