Boyer, Hogs win at Arkansas Dual in cross-country opener

Arkansas Razorback Lane Boyer started his sophomore season on the right track with a title win at the Arkansas Dual Friday night as Razorback men’s cross country opened the 2008 season.

Boyer, a native of Fredonia, Kan., clocked a time of 19: 57. 6 to take the fourmile race. He also paced the Razorbacks to a win in the team race. Arkansas scored a perfect 15 points with Oklahoma finishing second (51 ) and Missouri Southern finishing third (64 ).

“ This is a great way to open the season, ” Boyer said. “ This is what I envisioned before the race. I knew I could win because my training has been going so well. I had a great summer of training. It feels great to open up just like I wanted to. This is the first time I have won a race since high school and you run races to win so this feels great. ”

The win at the Arkansas Dual also marks head coach Chris Bucknam’s first meet win at the helm of the Arkansas cross country program.

“ This was a very good meet for us, ” Bucknam said. “ I’m very pleased with the effort that we saw from our guys. The guys we ran today looked extremely fit, on par for this time of year. I think we are off to a good start. ”

Finishing second for the Hogs and fourth overall was freshman Eric Fernandez. He clocked a time of 20: 03. 2. Junior Daniel LaCava was the third member of the team to cross the line. He finished sixth overall with a four-mile time of 20: 10. 3.

Sophomore Michael Chinchar was fourth on the team and ninth overall (20: 19. 7 ). Senior Alex McClary, making his Razorback cross country debut, rounded out Arkansas’ scoring five. His time of 20: 41. 1 was good for a 10 th-place finish overall.

Also making his Razorback debut Friday was freshman Rick Elliott. He clocked a fourmile time of 20: 44. 5, good for a 12 th-place finish overall. Next up for the Hogs will be the Missouri Southern Stampede, on Sept. 20, in Joplin, Mo. White takes win in

Fayetteville For the second time in as many seasons, Arkansas Razorback sophomore Catherine White won the 4 K race at the Arkansas Dual as women’s cross country opened the 2008 season. “ Tonight is a great chance to put on the uniform and get a race in, ” head coach Lance Harter said. “ More importantly, tomorrow is a big work out. We will race next weekend at San Diego and as the season progresses, the competition gets tougher. It’s good to see the kids run side-by-side as a pack. That was our goal. We have some good experience and good depth out there. It’s exciting to keep that going. ”

Clocking a 4, 000-meter time of 14: 06. 5, White took the race title and led Arkansas to a win in the team race. The Razorbacks scored a perfect 15 points with Missouri Southern finishing second with 48 points.

“ We tried to keep our pack together and run at a good tempo tonight, ” White said. “ It was good to get our first race under our belt. This meet is good to shake the cobwebs off and get used to racing together again. We try to get our pace back and get ready for the season. ”

Dacia (Barr ) Perkins was the second harrier to cross the line. She clocked a 4 K time of 14: 06. 9. Denise Bargiachi was third on the team and overall with her time of 14: 06. 9. Miranda Walker was Arkansas’ fourth runner. She finished fourth overall with a time of 14: 14. 3. Christine Kalmer rounded out the Razorbacks’ scoring five with a time of 14: 15. 9.

Also running for Arkansas were Jillian Rosen (seventh; 14: 25. 4 ), Megan Jackson (eighth; 14: 30. 6 ) and Ashley Williams (ninth; 14: 48. 5 ).

Next up for Arkansas will be the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, on Sept. 13.
